Story by Harriet Ramos

A TCU associate professor was in the Tarrant County Jail on Wednesday, Feb. 12, following his arrest last week on a bond violation after he allegedly came to class intoxicated, according to court records and a police report.

Michael Bachmann, who teaches criminal justice courses at TCU, was escorted off the campus by TCU police officers on the morning of Feb. 3, according to the police report obtained by the Star-Telegram.

Officers had responded to the building where Bachmann was teaching after a student complained to a staff member that their professor was drunk. The officers took Bachmann to the parking lot, where he was driven away from campus in a private car, according to the report.

Bachmann, 46, was initially arrested in August on a misdemeanor family violence charge. He is accused of injuring a member of his family “by grabbing her neck and pushing her to the ground, or by kicking her, or by scratching her with the defendant’s hand,” according to the criminal complaint.

Bachmann bonded out at that time, but was not allowed to drink alcoholic beverages as part of his bond conditions. He was not arrested by TCU police, but he was taken into custody in a Tarrant County courtroom on Feb. 5 on the bond violation, court records state.

Bachmann’s bond was set at $5,000 on Wednesday, Feb. 12, according to court records. He was still being held in the Tarrant County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon.

A prosecutor had asked that Bachmann be held without bail or that his bond conditions be amended to protect the victim in the domestic violence case. Court documents show the bond conditions have been updated to require Bachmann to stay away from the victim and to wear an alcohol monitoring device and a GPS tracker.

A TCU spokesperson said the university is aware of Bachmann’s Feb. 5 arrest, but it “does not comment on personnel matters.”

It’s not clear whether Bachmann is still employed by the university, and a TCU spokesperson did not respond to a Star-Telegram email requesting that information.

Bachmann’s defense attorney could not be reached by phone Wednesday.

A continuance was recently approved for the trial in the family violence case, and a new trial date has not been set.

His profile on the university's website says he teaches criminology classes, so this goes along nicely with our ethics professor who downloads child pornography.

Also his doctorate is from UCF, so clearly Mickey Mouse State is responsible. We oughtn't let such rabble into the Big XII. We've enough problems with the likes of Texas Tech and West Va.
Gives him street cred. Now he's more qualified to teach this material.

Like to drink and abuse women. Pretty sorry SOB. Jokes about him are really not funny, not someone who does what he is alleged of.

I think there's room in most situations for a bit of gallows humor. The joke, such as it was, was really about TCU not this person's family.

In case anyone is interested in my personal views on the matter, I think domestic abusers should be locked in stocks on the town square and beaten with rods, and rapists should be hanged. But since this is a mostly-sports internet message board I generally try to keep things light and trivial.

After 9 years of law enforcement I developed a pretty dark sense of humor. Also was a proponent of the death penalty for anything class A misdemeanor and above. As that is never going to happen the best I can do is crack an occasional bad joke.

Many have forgotten that in many of the United States, prior to the liberal Supreme Court of the 1970’s, [ Baylor accusations ] was actually a capital crime.

I know Texas was still executing men for [ Baylor accusations ] in the 1950’s, maybe even into the 1960’s.

There was a lot less [ Baylor accusations ] in the old days!

Was thinking the same thing. Why was this guy still allowed to teach after the August arrest?!
Did the school not know?
don't want someone like that leading a class of our students.

UCF has nothing to do with this. It’s an excellent school and if my son didn’t get into UF, he would have definitely gone to UCF. I’m very excited to have them in the B12.
