TCU professor arrested on bond violation after student reported he came to class drunk
Story by Harriet Ramos
A TCU associate professor was in the Tarrant County Jail on Wednesday, Feb. 12, following his arrest last week on a bond violation after he allegedly came to class intoxicated, according to court records and a police report.
Michael Bachmann, who teaches criminal justice courses at TCU, was escorted off the campus by TCU police officers on the morning of Feb. 3, according to the police report obtained by the Star-Telegram.
Officers had responded to the building where Bachmann was teaching after a student complained to a staff member that their professor was drunk. The officers took Bachmann to the parking lot, where he was driven away from campus in a private car, according to the report.
Bachmann, 46, was initially arrested in August on a misdemeanor family violence charge. He is accused of injuring a member of his family “by grabbing her neck and pushing her to the ground, or by kicking her, or by scratching her with the defendant’s hand,” according to the criminal complaint.
Bachmann bonded out at that time, but was not allowed to drink alcoholic beverages as part of his bond conditions. He was not arrested by TCU police, but he was taken into custody in a Tarrant County courtroom on Feb. 5 on the bond violation, court records state.
Bachmann’s bond was set at $5,000 on Wednesday, Feb. 12, according to court records. He was still being held in the Tarrant County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon.
A prosecutor had asked that Bachmann be held without bail or that his bond conditions be amended to protect the victim in the domestic violence case. Court documents show the bond conditions have been updated to require Bachmann to stay away from the victim and to wear an alcohol monitoring device and a GPS tracker.
A TCU spokesperson said the university is aware of Bachmann’s Feb. 5 arrest, but it “does not comment on personnel matters.”
It’s not clear whether Bachmann is still employed by the university, and a TCU spokesperson did not respond to a Star-Telegram email requesting that information.
Bachmann’s defense attorney could not be reached by phone Wednesday.
A continuance was recently approved for the trial in the family violence case, and a new trial date has not been set.
