FWST: Lack of trust? Analyzing the controversial fourth down decision in TCU’s loss to Baylor

“I wished we would’ve gone for it now on, second thought,” Dykes said. “I thought it was on our side of the 50, but maybe it wasn’t. I don’t know, it’s probably 50-50.

This is one of the most damming thing I have ever heard a coach say. Sonny’s situational awareness at that critical point in game was non-existent. As the head coach, Sonny should know exactly where the ball was on the field, particularly when deciding to punt or going for it.
Going for it or not isnt the point to me. (I personally think he should have.)
Not knowing exactly where the ball was placed at this critical point in the game is inexcusable. It confirms to me that Sonny is as clueless as he appears during a game…
I noticed during the game that Sonny kept calling for someone named Jeff. I'm guessing that was the person he kept talking to during the broadcast. Anybody know who he is and why our head coach seems to only talk to him instead of his coordinators?

Would you rather talk to Jeff or KB?

I think that Jeff is the imaginary friend that lives in Sonny’s head. Sonny never makes a move without consulting Jeff.
The conversation went something like this…
“Jeff, should we punt or go for it?” Jeff said, “Where is the ball spotted?” Sonny said, “How am I supposed to know? We’re running out of play clock. Punt! Punt!”, or something like that…

I believe thats the 'crutch' aka analytics guy that follows Sonny around on the sidelines like a puppy dog. Evidently Sonny can't make any decisions on his own so he has to consult with the 'crutch'. That's a huge RED flag to me!
@TooColdU - I believe it's Jeff Jordan, listed as Ass't AD For Player Personnel. I have no idea why he's on the sideline. But I do see Sonny talking to him a lot during the games.

What’s the point of an analytics guy if you’re going to punt on 4th and 2 in the opponents territory? Also an analytics guy should 100% be in the press box.

This is part of the quote that I have a problem with. “I wished we would’ve gone for it now on, second thought,” Dykes said. “I thought it was on our side of the 50, but maybe it wasn’t. I don’t know," That at is just inexcusable for the head coach NOT TO KNOW where the ball is. This is not the 1st time he has second guessed himself after the game or did not why they played bad.

A fish rots from the head down. Any "fixes" that don't correct that issue are mere stopgaps that postpone and perhaps worsen the impact of our day of reckoning, possibly causing material and permanent harm to the entire program.

It was early in the 4th quarter. TCU's 4th-and-2 isn't the problem, it's Baylor's 4th-and-9 that cost us the game. Couldn't hit and tackle the QB running up the middle.

It's the defense that is the problem.

Did you see the infographic they put up during the game that showed over 80+ percent of Baylor's rushes to the tune of over 200 yards were between the tackles?

We got crushed by the run and it was right up the gut the whole game. Then when we got gassed towards the end, their oline was just steam rolling our dline, pushing them back 5-10 yards a play. Not a good sign as to what the rest of the season holds.

I was very envious of that Baylor oline.
