Max is a perfect example of the stress in sports.
Put yourself in his shoes.
Max, for a number of months, lived in a world of perfection. Not 90% but 100%. He had to be perfect in all walks of life. In sports, with the media, teammates, coach's and most important...himself. He had to be perfect because so many people relied on his perfection. And, boy, did he deliver. National Championship game, Heisman Trophy runner-up, Number one player in the Big 12, number one player in so many polls I couldn't keep up. Everybody wanted a piece of Max.
Then he comes into the most fiercely competitive sport on the planet and was expected to perform at 110%. Most likely he is mentally exhausted, spent and very, very disappointed in himself for he just didn't perform to his expectations. He was just flat out tired and mentally unfit at this time.
So the Chargers saw this developing and most likely said, let's back him off of that torture he's been under and give this young man time to show us what we know what he can be. These coaches have seen this many, many times and knew what needed to be done. Let's give him time. Max is a marvellous young man who has gobs of professional potential at QB, and I'll add as a man, which he has already proven to be.
So Max, we're behind you with our 100%. Hang in there, you'll do just fine, we're sure!
