LAS VEGAS -- Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson's Freudian slip to open his state of the conference address to the media Wednesday is forgivable.

Thompson opened by comparing the state of the league to that of the same time last year, when Utah had announced plans to move to the Pac-12 and BYU was threatening to go independent.

"It's kind of like déjà vu to last year at this time," Thompson said. "We had sort of a traumatic year."

"Dramatic, not traumatic," he quickly corrected himself.

But everyone in the Red Rock Resort ballroom knew he had it right the first time. ...

The renovated press box at The Big House cost $200 million?

Wow! Was this a federally-funded project?

Does it come with a swimming pool?

Commissioner Thompson is embellishing a little. The last renovation of Michigan Stadium did cost over 200 million, but included the addition of a new press box, 83 luxury boxes, and 3,200 club seats as well as renovation of the seating bowl (bleachers, aisles and seats). And its self-financing - the 14 million in yearly revenue covers the 9 million in debt service.

College football is nuclear war - and some schools just have bigger stockpiles of weapons.

The Commissioner is a good guy but not a strong personality/leader. Wonder if he has the where-with-all to tell his staff to be fair with TCU this fall. Get my drift?
