FWST: BYU head coach back making defensive calls

BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall's decision to become more involved with his defense had been simmering for a while.

Long before he decided to fire defensive coordinator Jaime Hill five weeks into the season, Mendenhall had been feeling removed from his players. Especially the defense, where Mendenhall built his reputation through much of his coaching career, including being BYU's defensive coordinator in 2003-04. He became head coach in 2005 and is 51-19 at five-plus seasons.

"It's probably the most fun I've had in six years," said Mendenhall of his expanded role on defense. "It was very invigorating. I just love being with the players again. Sometimes as a head coach you get removed. But it was by choice, and I have no one to blame but myself. I love having more impact on their lives and how they perform on Saturday than what I had prior." ...
