FROG CARDS!!! (And A Long Time No See!)

Hope all of you are doing well, it’s been a long long time since I created a thread.

My 7 year old and I started collecting TCU cards a little over a year ago. We were getting them out last night to see which ones he was going to put on his new card displays. These are only TCU players in their college unis, and licensed cards (meaning they don’t have to photsoshop out the TCU logo). We have a lot more not pictured, but those are mainly base cards that aren’t rare. These pictured are mainly our autographed cards, cards with patches, and cards with low print runs.

A lot of them aren’t in nice one touch magazines yet, and some still have blue tape over the top loader, and most are in team
bags right now, so they will look better here soon.

In the last picture, I almost have every variation of the Hoover card except for the 1/1 and a couple of the /5. I’ll probably never find those but if any of you have one of these, I may be a buyer!

I just wanted to share as he’s really proud of his collection so far! Hope you fellas <and ladies> are doing well!

As the sun sets on a warm Saturday afternoon, a dad and his son sit side by side at the kitchen table, surrounded by stacks of TCU sports trading cards. They flip through their collection, sharing stories about favorite Horned Frog athletes and reminiscing about the games they have watched together. With each card they sort, laughter deepens their bond and fuels a shared passion. This simple hobby became a cherished ritual, a way for them to connect and create lasting memories as they navigate life and the world of sports together.

Being a good dad isn't an easy job, FOAP, but it sounds to me like you're off to a good start. Hang in there, amigo.

What about TCU baseball sets that use to be available at games?
There is a ton that we don’t have yet. We just keep adding as we go. Were those cards a certain “brand” or were they just cards that TCU athletics printed up and gave out?

For the time being we haven’t bought a bunch of the base cards that are a dime a dozen, but the plan is to go after those as well at some point!

They were just from the school.
Doubtful they are a dime a dozen because most people didn't keep them.
Probably not worth anything other than memories.

I have a huge collection of TCU player cards. This is a very nice collection. There are many more that I notice are missing, so this will keep you busy for years. You have many that I don’t have. I had to decide years ago that I was just going to get 1-5 of each player. Like you mentioned, the varieties of Hoover cards are just so many. Because he’s not too big of a star, I was able to get a couple of 1/1 and 1/5 cards off eBay that were less than $10. But companies make so many 1/1 cards now, it takes the feeling of exclusivity out of it. I sent you a PM about a set I think you should have if you don’t already.

Yeah, the unlicensed companies like Wildcard are putting out tons of 1/1 cards! The Hoover thing normally we wouldn’t go after but I saw some of the cards numbered to /50 going for around $10 bucks so we made a stab at it. I knew going in that I would never find the 1/1, and more than likely the cards numbered to /5. Ironically, I didn’t check for a few days in January and two of the different /5 cards sold. That was probably my only shot!

Leaving my son’s football game but I’ll check out your message here shortly! Thanks for the response!

They are super hard to find. I have the sets from two years but have never located any others.
My goal is to get a rookie card for each TCU player who has one made. Ideally, they are in their TCU uniforms, but it is not always an option. If they are more than about 20-25 years old, it was rare to find one with them in their college uniform with the licensed collegiate logos. At some point, they must have sorted out an agreement that allows it, because it’s extremely common now.

Interesting! If you had time to snap a photo or two, I would love to see what they look like!

Here’s a few obscure older cards:
Joe Don Looney and Mickey McCarty are custom cards that I found and not official issue. I have one for James Maness as well. The third photo are some lesser known players and cards that can be harder to find.
The fourth photo has some cool autograph cards that are a small sampling of the best ones I have.
The fifth photo is a sampling of some combo cards that are harder to find. Plus, I included one of my two autographed Turpin cards. Those are tough to find for less than about $75 now. I got them when they first came out for less than $10.
The next one are two of the 1 of 1 cards for Hoover and Bailey that I got on eBay for about $6 each.
The last photo has some really hard to find cards of really old players.
These are just a small sample of the boxes of cards I have. As I said, I try to get one pro card of every TCU player who has one made. I am not aware of a player I’m missing at the current time.

The first two photos have a sampling of players from the team sets plus one schedule that was a player card.
The third photo has a couple of favorite hard to find cards. Bo Schobel is one of my all time favorites and he didn’t have a regular issue pro card. This one is from a Super Bowl card set that has pretty limited production. The LaMarcus McDonald card is a 1 of 5 trade show card that was made. I have two of the five. And of course, Tank Carder cards are always cool.
The last photo has a signed Jim Swink card that I mailed off to him while he still had a medical office. He was kind enough to sign that and a Sports Illustrated for me. The Tomlinson card is super rare and is a 1 of 50. Probably the rarest LT rookie card there is. But the signature has faded to almost invisible. A problem with that set. If LT lurks on here, I’d love to get him to “re-sign” the card with something more durable. Then there’s the Davey card from a ‘56 Topps college set. Then, the Verrett card.
I hope y’all find a few cards you enjoy. I’ve been working on this collection for 30 years and this is just a handful of them. Max’s year alone, I believe that 11 players had official cards made. Probably a record year.
