5. 2000 – Chris Weinke, QB, Florida State

The Seminoles’ quarterback certainly deserved to be invited to the Heisman Trophy presentation in 2000. After spending several years as a minor league baseball player, Weinke tried his hand at college football and succeeded in a major way. He led the country in passing yards with 4,167 and threw for 33 touchdowns compared to just 11 interceptions.

In one of the closest votes in Heisman history, Weinke edged Oklahoma quarterback Josh Heupel. Heupel’s Sooners went onto defeat Weinke’s Seminoles 13-2 in the 2000 BCS Championship Game the following January. But I didn’t bring this up to debate the merits of either quarterback.

Down in Fort Worth, a running back for TCU put up one of the most impressive seasons in modern college football history.

The Horned Frogs had a chance to become the first real ‘BCS buster’ that year, but dropped a crucial game at San Jose State which knocked them out of contention for a major bowl. TCU still finished 10-1 that season, and it was due to a combination of tough defense and the tough-as-nails running of tailback LaDainian Tomlinson.

LT ran for 2,158 yards and 22 touchdowns for the Horned Frogs in 2000. Had TCU taken care of business and defeated San Jose State, Tomlinson would’ve placed much higher than fourth in the Heisman voting and may have even taken home the trophy.

Instead, Tomlinson had to settle for the Doak Walker Award and leaving Fort Worth as a bona fide Heisman snub.
