ESPN: TCU young on offensive line

By Andrea Adelson

The two most overlooked parts of any team are the offensive line and special teams -- until things go wrong, of course. But line play is generally a measure of how well a team does. A really good offensive line means big running holes and few sacks. A really bad one? Well, just ask any quarterback who has spent way too much time eating turf.

TCU had one of the best offensive lines in football last year (one of the most underrated, too). Outgoing starters Marcus Cannon, Jake Kirkpatrick, Zach Roth and Josh Vernon combined for 96 career starts. TCU ranked No. 10 in the nation in rushing, averaging 247 yards a game. It ranked tied for No. 5 in the nation with nine sacks allowed.

Kirkpatrick won the Rimington Award as the top center in the country; Cannon was an NFL draft pick. ...

RE: Off line) Some lack in reasoning power... If you had to line up everyday against a top rated defense in the country you wouldn't improve .....substantially?...!!

There's no doubt they will improve and going against the TCU defense will help that along, but there is nothing like game time experience to really mold an offensive line into a competitive unit.

Will be interesting to see how things go in the fall. Really wish we had an experienced O-line to ease the transition to a new starting QB. OTOH, we are always JR and Sr heavy on the OL, meaning we are often replacing 3-4 starters. Last year was an exception replacing only one.

Baylor was 90th in the country in sacks

Air force was 109th

nice to have 2 teams terrible at QB pressure to start

you have to wonder if Baylor and Air Force defenses will seem like they play in slow-motion after practicing against TCU's defensive line all these months...

IMO Spencer Thompson should be the starting left tackle. That would give us four who have significant game experience (with Dooley, Foltz and Olson) while the young hosses learn. Before long I expect Foltz, Horn, Wooldridge, Dunbar and maybe Michael Thompson to be a really dominating line.

The O-line should grow up quickly(with a good TCU defense as usual) and the O-line has been pretty good for TCU lately, but ummm what about OU in 2009 or whenever BYU beat them??? It might not be as fast as you hope for. Try to be somewhat realistic here.
