TCU key offseason issues: Expectations for Kendal Briles in 2024

After last season, the TCU Horned Frogs need a bounce-back year in 2024 and it starts at the top.

The coaching staff has lofty expectations to fix what went wrong last year. Perhaps the biggest offseason issue is how the coaching staff will handle the turnaround, and if anyone could potentially be on the hot seat if the Frogs do not improve.

As for head coach Sonny Dykes, fans have seen two extremes from his TCU tenure: a run to the national championship followed by a season where the team did not even make a bowl game.

Expectations should be somewhere right in the middle next season. With the expanded playoff, TCU could look to fill one of the top 12 slots, but a winning season with a bowl game victory is more realistic for this young core of players. Dykes should focus on establishing the Frogs in the new Big 12 as one of the top dogs in the conference.

Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles received plenty of criticism from Frog fans in year one. After the offense couldn’t find consistency throughout the season, many wanted him gone. Josh Hoover and the entire offense needs to look better in 2024 and show improvement for Briles to win over Fort Worth. If the play calling remains bland and screen-heavy, Briles could be on the hot seat after this season if the offense does not vastly improve.

The expectation for new defensive coordinator Andy Avalos is that the defense will show immediate improvement.
Avalos has brought in coaches that he has worked with in the past, like linebackers coach Ken Wilson. With a good track record from his time at Oregon as a defensive coordinator, the Frog defense should look a lot better under Avalos.

Even if things do not go as planned, don’t expect TCU to move on from Avalos after just one season.
