DMN: TCU’s defense not new to Virginia, who brings 6’6″ fullback Zachary Swanson back to Texas

Virginia beat Richmond handily before dealing Penn State a hearbreaking 17-16 defeat as the Nittany Lions missed what would have been a game-winning field goal as time expired. This week, the Cavaliers travel to Fort Worth to take on TCU. Here are five things to take away from Virginia head coach Mike London’s press conference this week:

1. The 4-2-5 defense that the Horned Frogs play has reminded London of some defenses he’s seen in the ACC, along with the Richmond team that Virginia saw in its season opener. The Cavaliers racked up 545 yards in a 43-19 win over the Spiders earlier this month but they will run into a much stingier TCU defense this weekend. The Horned Frogs have given up just six points and 24 first downs in their first two games of the year.

“They play kind of a 4-2-5 defense that Richmond, Duke, Virginia Tech kind of employ a little bit… we have our hands full,” London observed. “They’re aggressive and very athletic up front, and their safeties are involved in a lot of playmaking… They kind of dare you to throw the ball, but they have those defensive ends, linemen, outside safeties that can come off the edge or they can play coverage. They can run, so they’re very fast and athletic. They pose a lot of problems.” ...
