SMU's resurgence under Sonny Dykes is partially owed to TCU's Gary Patterson

SMU might not have been in a position to hold up its end of the rivalry if not for Patterson's efforts in rehabilitating Dykes' soul. Coaching-wise, that is.

Sonny Dykes had just been fired at Cal, the first time he'd been canned as a head coach, and the experience had left him shaken. Got a few offers as an offensive coordinator. Couple of SEC jobs, even. But he "desperately" wanted to get back to Texas, as he put it, and he needed a job where he could get his mind right and take a broad view of a successful program.

And that's how he ended up working for Gary Patterson at TCU in 2017.

"It was a great year," he said. "Made me a better coach."

Nice article. I always liked Spike, his dad. Seems like he was always upsetting aggy, even in the Sherrill/Slocum era. They would beat aggy when they would lose to much lesser teams. Yea!
