TCU spring breakout candidates: Cameron Smith poised to give the secondary a boost

Ethan Love

The TCU Horned Frogs picked up a plethora of defensive back help after the season, but none more interesting than Smith. Smith appeared in 31 games for Memphis recording 46 tackles, six passes defend and three interceptions.

The 6-0, 180-pounder from Whiteville, NC, joins Richard Toney Jr. as the other safety option TCU picked up this offseason. Smith will be competing for a starting role this offseason as the Frogs look to replace starters Mark Perry and Millard Bradford. TCU lost multiple safeties to the transfer portal also including Javeon Wilcox, Chace Biddle and Randon Fontenelle.

In the Frogs’ new defensive system, there will be four defensive backs in coverage compared to the five from last season. With the lessened help in the back, the Frogs will need a pure athlete moving around with Bud Clark in the secondary and Smith fits that role perfectly. Smith was recruited as a wide receiver out of high school.

Knowing the WR position well is always a benefit mentally for corners, as they know what receivers want to do. This explains the three interceptions from the ball-hawking Smith. His skills combined with the incumbent Clark could be an elite duo for the Frogs come September.
