AMES, IA. — So Paul Rhoads is playing guessing games surrounding Iowa State’s starting quarterback. Grant Rohach is No. 1 on the depth chart, Sam Richardson is the backup — and you might as well throw Chanse Creekmur in there, too.
It’s all a smoke screen.
Needing every element of surprise a 1-7 coach can muster, Rhoads wants TCU defensive coaches plotting two strategies for Saturday’s 11 a.m. homecoming game at Jack Trice Stadium — for quarterbacks who basically are the same.
It’s not as if one’s a runner and one’s a thrower. They’re interchangeable. There’s not one playbook for Rohach and one for Richardson, but at least Rhoads is thinking about change. He should now follow through with his depth-chart instinct. ...
