Denver Post: Air Force stays optimistic after loss

AIR FORCE ACADEMY — The look on Air Force coach Troy Calhoun's face indicated he wondered why anyone would ask the question.

But with five starters out because of injuries, including senior fullback Jared Tew, it seemed reasonable to wonder if Calhoun felt the Falcons still can be competitive.

After losing 27-25 to San Diego State on the road Saturday night and dropping to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain West Conference, and with the injuries, could this be the same AFA team that played Oklahoma straight up in the third week of the season and left Norman, Okla., with a 27-24 setback?

"We didn't play Oklahoma straight up," Calhoun said on the day the Sooners emerged as the No. 1 team in the first BCS standings of the season. "Good showings happen back in Manhattan on Broadway."

Neither Calhoun nor his players are down in the dumps as they prepare to play another giant. The Falcons take on fourth-ranked TCU on the road this week. ...
