Former TCU Standout Carpenter Headed to St. Louis‏

Former TCU third baseman Matt Carpenter has been called up by the St. Louis Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis.

The Cardinals' Minor League Player of the Year in 2010, Carpenter was a 13th-round selection in 2009 after a standout career for the Horned Frogs saw him be a two-time all-conference pick.

"The entire Horned Frog family is so excited for Matt," TCU baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle said. "He has worked extremely hard in both college and professional baseball to earn this opportunity, and I know the Cardinals will be a better team for having him up there.

"It's a great testimony to our program, and to college baseball in general, to have Matt make the big leagues less than two years removed from playing here at TCU."

Carpenter had a single-season school record 23 doubles while batting .333 with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs as a senior in 2009, helping lead the Horned Frogs to their first Super Regional appearance.

The Sugar Land, Texas, native is TCU's career leader in games played with 241. His 263 hits and 57 doubles rank second all-time at TCU, while his 159 RBIs place fourth. Carpenter was a career .312 hitter.

TCU's other current major leaguers are Jake Arrieta (Baltimore Orioles), Andrew Cashner (Chicago Cubs) and Sam Demel (Arizona Diamondbacks).

Congratulations, Matt! All your hard work has paid off. Take time to thank your Dad, too. He's invested a lot in your success.

Go Frogs!

He just made a diving stop down the 3B line and throw to 1B to get the runner. It should be a web gem on Baseball Tonight and possibly a top 10 play on SC.

Matt was last player cut at Cardinal's spring training, and they knew he would be a good one to have in waiting. He had best average, arrived one hour before anyone else, and was the hardest worker in the team's workouts before the cut, and mgr. La Russa said Carp would be back.
