Charleston Gazette: WVU falls to No. 10 TCU on final play, 31-30

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia’s football program has spent the majority of its first three years in the Big 12 attempting to get its defense up to speed in order to compete on a level playing field.

Saturday, the Mountaineers proved they’ve accomplished that. The trouble was, then their offense failed them,

Big time.

West Virginia staved off No. 10 TCU time and again in a showdown at Mountaineer Field, holding the nation’s No. 1 offense in check for most of the day. But in the end, five turnovers by the offense — all of them on WVU’s side of the field — allowed the Horned Frogs to stay close enough that when the West Virginia defense finally erred it cost them the game.

In the end, it was Jaden Oberkrom’s 37-yard field goal on the last play of the game that was the difference. His kick gave TCU a 31-30 win.

But it was one defensive mistake — a blown coverage on a 40-yard pass that got TCU into position for the game-winner — and those five turnovers that were really the difference.
