Esa Ahmad, No. 12 West Virginia’s second-leading scorer, did not travel with the team Friday. The Mountaineers begin a two-game road trip in today’s 2 p.m. ESPN game at TCU. WVU plays Monday at No. 9 Baylor.
Ahmad, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward who was twice named the Ohio high school player of the year, had started every game he’d played with the Mountaineers but missed Monday’s win against Texas with a back injury. Junior guard Dax Miles started in his place and did not score. Redshirt freshman forward Lamont West had a career-high 23 points off the bench.
Ahmad is averaging 11.7 points and 4.1 rebounds. His 27 points in a home win against Kansas last month is the most scored by a WVU player this season, and he followed that with 20 points on the road against the Jayhawks last week. He shoots 50 percent from the floor and 36 percent from 3-point range.
