HOUSTON — When David Bailiff showed up on the Rice campus four years ago, he was a lonely man. The former Texas State head football coach went to his first spring camp with 54 players 31 under the NCAA limit.
This August, Bailiff opened fall camp with 105 bodies. The fifth-year head coach loves his team's depth, raves about the talent level he has at quarterback, tailback and wide receiver, hopes for a defensive upgrade and finally feels as if he doesn't have to plug in freshmen out of necessity.
Not that Rice has arrived. Not after a depressing 4-8 season with more than a dozen critical injuries, Bailiff's second straight losing season.
But Bailiff feels as good about the direction of the program as he ever has — 18 losses in his past 24 games notwithstanding. ...
