Austin American-Statesman: Baylor has bear of an opener against tough TCU

The first Big 12 game of the season is the best matchup of opening weekend as Baylor entertains TCU in a national TV game Friday night (7, ESPN).

Big 12 teams are favored in the other nine openers — from Texas A&M by 15 1/2 over SMU to Oklahoma State by 361/2 over Louisiana-Lafayette — but not in Waco. The Horned Frogs are a 61/2-point choice.

TCU is coming off an undefeated, Rose Bowl-championship season and was No. 14 in the Associated Press preseason poll.

Baylor played in its first bowl game since 1994 and has much of the firepower back that smashed 55 school offensive records, many of them broken by dazzling quarterback Robert Griffin of Copperas Cove. No wonder a near-capacity crowd of 46,000 to 47,000 fans is expected. ...
Most BCS schools prefer dining on cupcakes in week one.

"In all honesty, you'd like to have a good gauge on your team before you jump into a well-lit fire, but we'll quickly find out exactly what we've got here,'' Bears coach Art Briles said. "We have to be mid-season ready on the first snap, and that's the way we've approached it since January.

What a joke. What it should say is "Most top 20 programs open with a cupcake home game. TCU on the other hand will open with a cupcake road game."

Baylor is a program that deserves to be sent on the road to be someone else's tune up in the first week, not the other way around. The fact they are in a BCS conference (as least for a while longer) doesn't change that.

You missed the best part of the link to this story. Under Big 12 Power Poll:

7. Texas Tech (8-5, 3-5) vs. Texas State (4-7, 1-6 SLC) Red Raiders picked off TCU guru Glasgow and his 4-2-5 defense; now if they could only get Frogs' talent.

Rod? Paging Rod....

Glasgow's a good guy and a good coach......and now it turns out HE was the ``guru" behind the 4-2-5 success all those years. He just wasn't recognized (except at TCU) until he took a job in the Big 12-2-1, etc.

Is anyone suprised by the fact that TAMU is a 15.5 point favorite over SMU?

Not really. Aggies have a lot of guys returning and a whole lot of hype (as usual), and the game is in Aggieland. Both teams are coming off of terrible bowl losses, so that's a wash. That line looks about right, but I took SMU in my weekly pickem pool...wouldn't put money on that though.

RBWLHCGP had nothing to do with our defense, it was the guy who left for a BCS conference... And it was due to our talent, which according to AAS is superior to Tech's.
