Finnegan had a great start to his new season tonight....7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K's against the Phillies.

One of the best starts he's had in Cincy.

Arrieta pitched really well last night...6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's against the Cardinals.

Carpenter's had a little slower start to the season so far, just 1/8, though no shame in that coming in games started by Lester and Arrieta...plus, he's adjusting to a new role as the 3rd hitter in the Cardinals lineup (after the acquisition of Dexter Fowler).

Cashner has a rehab start scheduled for 4/10...

Andrew Cashner rehab start April 10 for Frisco

Righthander Andrew Cashner will make a rehab start for Frisco on Monday
Texas Rangers pitcher Andrew Cashner will make a rehab start for the AA Frisco Roughriders on Monday, April 10, per the beat guys. The righthander started the season on the disabled list due to biceps tendintis.

Cashner, who pitched a sim game today, had expressed a desire to join the major league rotation on April 15, the first time the Rangers need a fifth starter this year. Pitching coach Doug Brocail, however, has expressed a preference for Cashner to make at least two rehab starts before being activated, which would put him on schedule for April 20.

Nick Martinez or Dillon Gee would seem to be the most likely candidates to be called up to start on April 15 if Cashner doesn't go. My guess is that Drew Robinson, currently the fourth bench guy, gets sent down on April 15, with the Rangers sticking with an eight man bullpen.

The rangers are 0-3. Giving up a slam in the 9th to lose 9-6 isn't good.

Dyson has been atrocious so far.

In 1 combined inning pitched (.2 and .1) he has given up 8 ER...for a bloated ERA of 72.00.

It's been my assumption that at some point Bush will be named the closer...could happen pretty soon given how Dyson is throwing.

Trying to figure out why Bush wasn't named the closer out of spring training? Funny because the bullpen has some arms, and what looks to be young talent. But our closer doesn't throw hard, doesn't have nasty stuff and now doesn't have control over his pitches.

In other news, Arrietta gave up 0 ER in his first start and got the win.

IIRC, Bush gave up the tying run Monday. Clearly better than Dyson so far, but not like he's been lights out so far. Jeffress has closer experience with Milwaukee, no? He could be another candidate.

Tampa Bay Rays Bring Back Jason Coats on Minor League Deal

Jason Coats had been released by the Tampa Bay Rays back in January, but he was not out of work for long. The Rays have resigned the outfielder to a minor league contract.

Back in January, the Tampa Bay Rays had claimed Jason Coats off of waivers from the Chicago White Sox. He was a relatively interesting player, having flashed solid power and speed numbers in the minors. In 2016, he had a .330/.394/.519 batting line in the International League before making his Major League debut. While he did not perform as well at the Major League level, with a .200/.298/.340 batting line in 58 plate appearances, Coats minor league track record was such that he deserved a longer look.

And so, the Rays had claimed Coats back in January. Unfortunately, his tenure with the team got off to a rough start, as Coats tore his UCL on the same day he was claimed. Naturally, the Rays released him, rather than keep him on the roster given his injury status.

However, considering that he will be out for the year, Coats was not unemployed for long. The Rays have signed Coats to a minor league deal, where he will remain on the disabled list for the season. As he underwent Tommy John surgery back in January, he will not be ready to play again until next season.

However, in signing Coats, it gives the Rays the opportunity to see what he can do next year. Coats may well have been a part of the outfield competition this season had he not been injured, and had a solid performance during the Spring. Now, that chance may have to wait a year.

It is possible that he can still be a part of the competition in 2018. Although he may not be able to throw immediately when Spring Training begins, Coats may still be able to swing the bat and get a look as a designated hitter in some game action.

However, when Coats can return to the field, he could prove to be a versatile outfielder. He has played in all three outfield positions in the minors, performing well defensively. He notched 23 outfield assists in right, showing his strong arm prior to the injury. If the arm comes back, and he has that same ability to throw, Coats could prove to be a perfect fourth outfielder in the coming years.

Jason Coats still has a chance to contribute to the Tampa Bay Rays. It just might take a year longer than both sides hoped.

Tigers sign catcher Bryan Holaday to minor-league deal

JUPITER, Fla. -- Catcher Bryan Holaday is back with the Detroit Tigers.

He signed a minor-league contract on Friday and was assigned to Triple-A Toledo.

Holaday signed a minor-league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies over the winter but failed to make the team out of spring training.

The Tigers have two other catchers who were expected to be in Triple-A Toledo. Miguel Gonzalez and John Hicks, who's on the 40-man roster, both got extensive work this spring.

It's unclear if all three will be on the Mud Hens' roster or Gonzalez will start the season in Double-A Erie. Official minor-league assignments should come out this weekend.

Had a chance to listen to Brandon speak at my sons select baseball club last month. He talked about trying to strengthen his body during this offseason to gain a bit of extra velo during games and an extra inning each outing. Said it was an adjustment of knowing he was going to be a starter and not coming out of the pen.

Sounds like that plan worked for the first game out.

I didn't know Bush's background till I watched a show on HBO about his past.

Talk about having a second chance.

Read somewhere than Finnegan's fastball was 2-3mph faster than last year (sitting 94-96).

That's one thing I noticed from watching that game, he looks like he added some weight which could help him (since he does get put in the "smaller" pitcher category).

Looks like it might have helped him.

Angels trade Jordan Kipper for Damien Magnifico

The Orioles and the Angels swapped minor league pitchers today

In what appears to be another baffling trade, Billy Eppler sent the Angels 2016 minor league pitcher of the year to the Orioles in exchange for a dude with 3 innings of MLB experience.

If the goal is to up the Angels name game, then acquiring Brooks Pounders and now Damien Magnifico seems to be helping with the fact that Eppler traded away Jett Bandy this past off season.

Jordan Kipper, who was the Angels org pitcher of the year in 2016 has yet to pitch above AA level but has steadily climbed in the org since being drafted in the 9th round of the 2014 draft. In AA last season, Kipper had a 3.35 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, and 85 Ks with 153 IP. In his 5 games so far this year, Kipper has a 1.74 ERA, .194 BAA, and 0.94 WHIP.

Damien Magnifico threw mostly for AAA in 2016 to the tune of a 4.06 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and 61Ks in 62 IP. He has a .389 BAA in 7.2 IP so far in 2017.

The biggest difference between the two is that Kipper is a starter and Magnifico is a reliever. Perhaps that was a big motivation for this trade and Eppler is continuing his hunt for major league ready bullpen help. Also helping - Magnifico throws hard and his fastball can touch 100 MPH. The catch? Magnifico also has had control issues.

We know know that Billy Eppler favors position players who make good contract and play solid defense. It’s also becoming clear that Eppler likes hard throwing pitchers - if if they come with control issues.

Was it a good trade? On the surface is doesn’t look great to me, but time will tell and perhaps they didn’t see much future in the big leagues for Kipper.

John Sickels offers his opinion on the Kipper side of the trade:

http://www.minorleagueball.com/2017/5/7/15573054/damien-magnifico-jordan-kipper-orioles-angels-trade

Orioles and Angels swap pitching prospects
Orioles send hard-throwing Damien Magnifico to Angels for control artist Jordan Kipper

Jordan Kipper, RHP: Kipper was drafted by the Angels in the ninth round in 2014 from Texas Christian University. After a poor 2015 in the California League, he was more effective in the 2016 Texas League, posting a 3.35 ERA in 153 innings with an 85/41 K/BB. Returning to Double-A this year, he posted a 1.74 ERA in 31 innings for the new Angels affiliate in Mobile, with an 18/8 K/BB and 21 hits allowed.

Kipper is 6-4, 185, born October 6th, 1992 in Phoenix, Arizona. He is very different than Magnifico, with a fastball at 88-92 MPH, occasionally a tad higher, but with good sinking action and much better command of the heat. He also has a slider/cutter, combining with the sinking fastball to give him a high ground ball rate.

Kipper’s curveball and change-up are mediocre and his low strikeout rate is a caution flag, but he throws strikes and keeps the ball down. He could be a useful back-end starter or (more likely) a middle reliever.

Looks like Brandon Finnegan may not be back until June...

http://riveraveblues.com/2017/05/58-to-59-preview-cincinnati-reds-153537/

Injury Report
The Reds have a great deal of pitching on the disabled list right now, which makes their recent success all the more impressive. Anthony DeSclafani (their de facto ace since they dealt Johnny Cueto to the Royals) is out until July thanks to a sprained UCL, and he was recently joined on the DL by reliever Tony Cingrani and the 24-year-old Brandon Finnegan (the prize of that Cueto deal). Finnegan was a solid-average starter last season, and looked great through three starts this year – he’s not expected back until June. And, despite the fact that he has made made all of eight starts since the beginning of 2015, it bears mentioning that Homer Bailey is on the 60-day DL. Bailey was near the top of the same prospect lists as Phil Hughes back in the day, and is owed a minimum of $68 MM through the end of 2019.

Arrieta had his best start of the season...7 IP, 1 hit, 2 BB, 6 K's.

Montero running his mouth may have a been the best thing for Arrieta, he looked very focused today and Contreras is much harder to run on.
