Please explain opening kickoff

Surely there is a ref on this board who can explain how a player can kneel out of bounds, reach onto the field of play, and grab the football that is laying inbounds, and it’s considered a kick out of bounds??!

simple, that is the way the rule reads.

as to why it is written that way, entirely different matter, but that was the right call.

Rugby has similar rules for kicks. There are circumstances where if a ball is kicked directly out of bounds it goes back to where it is kicked. If it bounces in bounds first it is placed where it went out of bounds. A smart player will put 1 foot out of bounds and catch a ball that was going to land in bounds, causing it to go back to where it was kicked. Perhaps that rule carried over to football.

Simple: If the ball is in bounds but a receiver lands with his feet out of bounds, the catch is ruled out of bounds. similar rule and many players have done the same thing. Smart play on their end.
