Why wasn't AD a serious contender for O'Brien award?

Was I supposed to type something here?
Davey O'Brien's longtime friend and business partner, Charles Ringler, believed that the accomplishments and commitment of one of Fort Worth's finest sports heroes deserved to be honored and remembered. In November 1977, just before O'Brien passed away from cancer, Ringler and other members of The Fort Worth Club established the Davey O'Brien Foundation and the O'Brien Memorial Trophy. The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award (The O'Brien) is the nation's oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The O'Brien honors candidates who exemplify Davey O'Brien's enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics. (from the foundation's website)

Somewhere along the way the way was lost. Dan Jenkins resigned his position with the foundation in protest of the present direction. That Ringler and David O'brien, Jr.
could honestly support a player lacking an "enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in academics and athletics" is difficult to comprehend. The selection of Cam Newton is an egregious affront to the name and character of Davey O'brien and TCU. To give this award to Cam Newton solely on the basis of his athletic accomplishments without regard to his questionable "enduring character" and therefore to have his named linked forever directly with Davey O'brien and indirectly with TCU is tantamont to saying that this sort of behavior would have been consistent with Davey Obrien himself and that this behavior is the type of behavior that
TCU finds acceptable in its students.

The NCAA has rendered its judgment and found that Cam Newton's behavior deserves no negative consequence. The message has been and apparently continues to be
that athletes, whose talent-an accident of birth and skill-a product of their own effort, may commit violations of society's rules with impunity. Cam Newton won by vote many awards. There would have been nothing wrong with giving the O'brien to another quarterback. Nothing wrong with taking a stand to preserve the integrity and significance of the award. Sometimes caving in is just easier and we have all done it. Still we expect more from those that seek to honor the best among us.

The character and life of Davey O'brien though not perfect was quite exemplary. This year's award recipient, not so much.

Well said.

Time for the O'Brien folks to clean house.

As opposed to posting on a fan message board?:wacko::wacko::wacko::wacko::wacko::wacko::wacko::wacko::wacko::wacko::wacko::wacko:

Didn't mention a thing about message board people. they're (we) are a breed of their (our) own.

was only referencing people who feel the need to shoot off emails and letters at every thing that they feel dissatisfied with.

So, I don't follow why you brought that up. Good job though?
