WAC, ASUN To Form New FBS Conference?

The realignment wheels keep spinning, and this time it could include a massive addition to the FBS ranks. ESPN reported Friday that 10 schools from the ASUN and Western Athletic Conference are in the early stages of combining to create a football-only league that will make the jump from FCS to FBS sometime in the near future.

The new league would consist of Stephen F. Austin, Utah Tech, Eastern Kentucky, Austin Peay, Abilene Christian, Southern Utah, Tarleton State, Eastern Kentucky, Central Arkansas and North Alabama. UT Rio Grande Valley is also slated to join the group once its program gets off of the ground prior to the 2025 season. The new league would then become the 11th FBS conference and would be considered part of the "Group of Five," which obviously could re-consider its name once the new conference joins the FBS ranks.”

A lot of surprises in college football this year.

Texas A&M has made the decision to take Tarleton to a 25,000+ enrollment university with major D1 athletics programs. It’s incredible the cash being dumped the last several years and more projects in the works. Seems they are focused on being a major “gang of 5” level football program and a top tier basketball program athletically. Billy Gillespie is doing a heck of a job pushing the transformation. Lots of people pointing to Gonzaga as the model for the basketball program at Tarleton. All it takes is a bunch of cash and a good luck streak.

Utah Tech? Honestly, I'm 71, college football fan all my life, never even heard of Utah Tech. Is it a branch of TT?
Before the current attempt to rewrite history occurred, this was the Dixie State Rebels. Kind of like the Arlington State Rebels before they became UT-Arlington.
Southern Utah was settled by people from the southern US to a significant extent and there was sympathy for the Confederacy.

And don’t forget our Tarleton branch campus in southwest Ft. Worth near the Sonic Drive In. :)

Didn’t realize they renamed Dixie State U. It was always an exceedingly stupid name for a university in Utah. As I recall, the school was founded around WWI, which made the name ever more absurd.

I've heard talk of eventually extending the Tex-Rail commuter line southwest to the Tarleton campus and making that the southern terminus. History shows that the arrival of "the railroad" has always been a major impetus for growth in many a fledgling western area!
