TCU women kick off play today at the NCAA finals. This is the final year of the NCAA's agreement with Grayhawk Golf Club to host the championship for both men and women. Play will be on the Fazio-designed Raptor course, which Golfstat has posted at 6,368 yards--pretty typical for a women's event.

The event has 30 teams and features 60 of the top-100 college players. After 3 rounds, the field is cut to 15 teams and 9 other individuals for round 4, which determines the individual champ and sets the field of 8 teams to advance to match play.

TCU is projected as the 25th-best team, so making the final 15 could be a stretch. But the Frogs have played very well late, staying within two shots of #2 Wake Forest at regionals (and sending home #14 Arizona State, which the field should be thankful for given the finals location in the Sun Devils' backyard).

TCU will start with the lineup it used in its stellar final round of regionals: Macnab, Sa, Lau, Clancy & King. The Frogs are paired today with two other teams that overachieved at regionals, Tulsa and New Mexico. TCU women got off to a shaky start in Scottsdale (6 bogeys, a double and a triple over the first 3 holes) but they righted the ship and shot +5 (293), which is 7 shots better than their best trip around Grayhawk last year.

Their score was 9th out of the morning wave, which included the bottom half of the draw. They'll probably wind up 19th or so when Round 1 is finished, but only 4 teams in their wave finished better than +3, so they'll be within shouting distance of the top 12.

Sofia Barroso Sa and Lois Lau both shot -1 to lead the team; Sofia seems to thrive on tough courses and Lois has posted multiple top-15 finishes on desert courses.

So, the Frogs wound up T16 yesterday and are in the last group off this afternoon. The upper half of the field gets the morning wave and most of those teams are scoring better than they did yesterday afternoon. Cool temps, fresh greens, little breeze. TCU will need to find a way to score well in the afternoon to keep their chances of advancing alive. Temps will be mid-90s, but at least the wind is forecast in the single digits. Would not be surprised to see a substitution based on yesterday's scores, but as it stands now, it looks like the Frogs are sticking with the same lineup as yesterday.

The TCU women shot +7 in Scottsdale today. Not terrible--and Caitlyn Macnab's bogey-free 69 was darn good--but collectively the Frogs are T20, four shots off the current cutline for round 4, and 14 shots off the pace for match play. They'll need a special round tomorrow to keep their season alive.

Scores are high in Scottsdale today--no teams shot under par in the morning wave. That's probably a good sign for TCU (playing late) if they can keep it close to par. (Easier said than done.) Frogs have put Sabrina Nguyen into the lineup for round 3.

TCU women finish Round 3 at nationals in 20th place, which means they do not advance as a team to the final round of stroke play. They outplayed their seeding and only missed the cut by 5 shots, but I think they will feel like it was an opportunity missed.

One Frog who I think gets a bonus round is Sofia Barroso Sa, who is T30 individually and I believe 6th among players on non-advancing teams (top 9 play round 4).

So you think you’re good enough to qualify for the US Open?

That's great. By the way, Hayden Springer T18 through 15 holes.

Update: Springer (who started on hole 16) finishes with 3 straight birdies. He's T5.

I love the U.S. Open qualifying process. Love that nobodies riding a hot streak can earn their way into a major. Love that tour pros care enough to slug it out with collegians and journeymen. It's an individual version of soccer's FA Cup.

Hayden Springer with a tough afternoon round (+3) will not advance to his second U.S. Open in 3 years. J.J. Killeen also finishes well back, as does Clark Dennis. KF.c brother-in-law Johannes Veerman was closer (-6) but will finish at least 2 shots out of a playoff.

Among current collegians, UT and former Okie Light player Brian Stark will make a playoff for one of the final spots. Edit: Stark wound up 2nd alternate after losing the playoff to Hank Lebioda and another pro. Sergio Garcia got through; Ryan Palmer, Ryan Moore and Graeme McDowell all missed by a shot.

Sofia Barroso Sa had another solid day (+1) and finished T37 at nationals--a nice cap to a very good freshman year. Good things ahead for a player who shows mental toughness.

Wake women about to wrap up the national title in Arizona behind sixth-year senior Emilia Migliaccio, the Stetson Bennet of college golf. TCU has to be thinking about playing them to within 2 shots a couple of weeks ago.
