The good news is that the ladies played stroke for stroke with the #2 team in the country. The bad news is that the #2 team is (also) in 7th place.

First day is mostly about not shooting yourself out of the tournament, and that job was accomplished--Frogs are only (edit) 5 shots back of 5th. No need to panic. But they are chasing alongside some very good teams behind a middling team playing great on its home course. So, there's little margin for error.

Today TCU was paired with the team that posted the low round of the day. Tomorrow they'll be paired with 3 Curtis Cuppers on a mission to do the same. Frogs need to make sure they play their own game.

If you told me that the Frogs' #5 player was in the top 10 individually (Clancy T9), I'd have guessed that TCU would be in the top 3. They're getting performance there that has been missing all season; time to capitalize with equally solid play from 1, 2 & 3.

TCU women got just what they needed yesterday. They didn't lose any strokes (71-71-73-73), they didn't panic when Wake made its inevitable run, they picked up shots on a couple of contenders (Florida, Florida State), and they go into Day 3 with a real shot to advance (2 shots back of 5th), plus a chaser's mentality. It's a very competitive regional, and the Frogs are competing well against some top programs.

Frogs have subbed in Trinity King for the final round, playing for Sabrina Nguyen. And she's -1 through 2 holes. Several other contenders have also played subs--Florida, Fla. St., Arizona State.

I checked in when TCU was 4-6 holes into the round and--they were +6 for the day, 10 shots out of a qualifying spot. Thought, "Well, not the Frogs' day--good try though." And quit watching the scores.

Maybe I should not watch scores more often. TCU has since filled its card with birdies and is -4 for the day, matching the low score. They have a few holes to play, and teams on the course behind them...but they are a couple of shots inside the cutline.

Frogs are in at -2 for the round, +2 for the tournament -- 70-71-72-73 today. Shoutout to Trinity King for the 72 as a sub. They are in 3rd. If two teams don't pull back 4 shots on the last 4 holes, TCU will advance!

Julien Brun is a shot off the lead through 12 holes of Round 3 at the DP World Tour's Soudal Open in Belgium. He's been in good form--would be great to see him win his first event on the primary Euro Tour. David Ravetto and Jeong Weon Ko also in the top 30.
Update: He shot a third straight 67 and is T3, 3 shots off the lead going into Sunday.

Brent Hamm missed qualifying for the US Open by 3 shots at Squaw Creek--doomed by a bogey-double start. JJ and Connor Henry were also among those who didn't make it through.

Who did get through? That'd be 57-year-old Clark Dennis, who shot 66 to win co-medalist and then shot 66 the following day to medal in the US Senior Open qualifier in Carrollton. Chalk one (or two) up for all of us 1980s Texas parochial-school players.

Also, while Andrew Spaulding didn't get through in Kingwood last month, his twin brother Matt, who plays for U. of Denver, was among those who qualified in Westminster, Colorado.

I played quite a few rounds with Clark and his family “entourage” in my junior days.

If you know, you know.

TCU has posted its lineup for the NCAA Auburn regional, which starts tomorrow. Newly minted grad Brent Hamm gets the start along with the four Euros. While Hamm hasn't made a start with the TCU first team this spring, it makes sense--he finished third at the recent DBU tournament competing as an individual, and he's playing close to home in the southeast.

The 7th-seeded Frogs are paired with 8 and 9 seeds Chattanooga and Houston. They'll be on the course--which plays at 7,560 yards--from 8:55a Central.

I see Clark and his son Will a lot at MVCC. Clark’s a great guy.
That’s good to hear. He wasn’t always. But traveling the world for 30 years and getting your brains beat out every week can be a humbling experience.

He should have won the 1994 US Open at Oakmont. Tee to green, he outplayed everybody that week. He was that good.

Clark, Bob Estes and Brian Watts were the top three golfers in that class that graduated hs in Texas in ‘84. Clark was the best swinger of the three by far. All three had close calls at major championships.

Good start for the TCU men in Auburn. They shoot +4, good for T3 and 2 shots ahead of the line to advance.

Could have been a great start, as the Frogs were under par most of the day before getting sloppy late. All five players were in the game, which was important to keep the damage to a minimum. Jacob Skov Olesen was one who didn't give up any late shots; his reward is a tie for 3rd individually after a 2-under 70.

Lots of golf to play and lots of movement on the leaderboard likely tomorrow--7 teams are within 5 shots on either side of the cutline, including the top 3 seeds. Eighth-seeded Chattanooga is the surprise leader.

TCU dropped just enough shots to fall into the 4/5/6 pairing tomorrow, which includes top-ranked Vandy. Frogs can expect the Commodores to come out firing--a bit of deja vu to the women's regional, when TCU was paired with Wake in round 2. If TCU plays its own game, they'll be in the mix at the end.

Frogs lost some ground today in Auburn. They shot +10, including +5 on their last two holes, and that leaves them tied for 7th, three shots off the line to advance.

It's interesting to see the variation across regionals--the Auburn course is clearly the toughest of the six. The team in 5th is +11. Right now, the scores of the 5th-place teams at other regionals are -27, -23, -11, -10, and +6. The Frogs are in a survival test.

And they are in the mix, but they have no margin for error. The top 3 teams are 9 shots clear of 5th, and the fourth-place team is top-ranked Vanderbilt. So that leaves a handful of teams pushing for what looks like one spot. Ohio State, Indiana, TCU and Washington are all within 3 shots of each other, and Tennessee (the 2 seed) is another 5 back. Frogs have the talent to get it done, but it will take a stellar round tomorrow.

Here's hoping that the Frogs can find some magic, stop dropping shots on the last few holes, and delay Coach Montigel's retirement party by another week.

Three front-nine triples have pretty well sunk the Frogs' chances. Looks like a quiet end to the Bill Montigel era (epoch?).

If there's a silver lining, it's that we might hear an announcement this week. I have no knowledge; just assuming that ADJD has his man and is waiting for the stage to clear.

Update: Frogs post the high score of the day. They finish T9, 21 shots below the cutline. Possibly the last appearances for several Frog seniors. The senior class has produced some great moments--all the best to those who are moving on.
