Plenty on the line for the TCU women today in Norman. Belmar Country Club has not done a good job separating teams through 36 holes. Frogs are in 7th place, but just 5 shots out of 2nd and 6 shots clear of 11th in the tightly packed field.

Individually, Caitlyn Macnab picked up where she left off--on the leaderboard at T5 (-4). She posted five top-3 finishes last season; next goal will be winning an event. She's three shots back of the leader. Lois Lau is T17.

Frogs had four good scores on Saturday but counted a 76 yesterday. Getting at least one good score out of the 4 and 5 slots is likely to make the difference in where TCU finishes. Frogs are in the first group out this a.m. (8:30), playing with Va. Tech and Clemson.

Florida State has opened up a 3-shot lead with 3 holes to play, but Macnab is still the individual clubhouse leader.

Caitlyn shaves 3 strokes off her own TCU record for 54-hole stroke total (200). I think the Frogs' single-day score of 268 will also be a school record due to Belmar being par 70; I believe their -12 score is a shot shy of equaling the single-round record relative to par.

Update1: Florida State's Charlotte Heath makes a quad on the final hole, and the Frogs and Noles are tied! One FSU player left to decide it...along with 2 Houston players (Cougars 2 shots back).

Update2: Score correction restores FSU's lead. Apparently, the quad was made by FSU's Alice Hodge, who was the non-counter for FSU. Hodge had an infamous final-hole meltdown in 2021 that cost the Seminoles to miss match play by a stroke. She was about 10 yards off the green in reg and only needed a bogey. Chunked the chip and then 3-jacked. I remember watching the broadcast; Golf Channel chose not to show the final miss.

Caitlyn Macnab wins the Schooner Fall Classic for her first college title! She closed with a 64 to win by one. Lois Lau also notched a top-five finish for the Frogs with a 64. Each was just one shot off the single-round school record.

Frogs finished second, three shots back of Florida State, which ended last season ranked seventh nationally. TCU went from 12th to 7th to 2nd over the three rounds. The 268 final-round score sets a new TCU record for raw score.

Shout out to freshman Sofia Barroso Sa, who shot a final-round 68. If Coach Larkin is continuing last year's tradition, Sofia will have "earned her bag" with the sub-70 round.

This team will have some ups and downs due to youth BUT it’s a very talented team with high upside. Caitlyn is just special. Better person than she is a golfer. Be very proud of her as a frog.

TCU men posted the lineup for the Ben Hogan Invitational at Colonial starting Monday. As with last year, Chris Berzina will miss the action. Last year Berzina got in the doghouse with an early bad performance, then managed to play himself out of qualifying despite posting the best two rounds at Colonial.

This year Berzina made another hash of an early start. The team didn't post qualifying scores this week, so no ability to second-guess. But it's sad to see a hometown senior unable to make the squad for the team's high-profile local event.

On the other hand, starters Massey and Dial are both Fort Worth boys as well, so here's hoping they play great this week and have a ton of support.

It's a loaded field (13 of 16 teams are in the top 25, with 4 top-10-ranked amateurs), so good golf will be on tap for those able to attend. Forecast looks great and it's free to attend--shotgun start on Monday at 8:15a (36-hole day) and at 8:00a for the final-round on Tuesday. Go Frogs!

Edit: Frogs paired with Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State and Arizona State on Day 1.

TCU women post the lineup for this week's Barbara Nicklaus Cup at Muirfield Village. Last year's inaugural event featured both men's and women's teams with trophies going to men's, women's and combined teams. This year, it's women only--and only 8 teams. You would think that a limited field would involve top-ranked teams, but TCU is the only team that ended last season in the top 40.

It's a great opportunity for the women to play a PGA Tour and Solheim Cup venue in Muirfield Village. They'll be on the course at 7a Central on Monday.

TCU will be paired with Ohio State on Day 1, which hired the former Kent State coach and picked up #14 am and Curtis Cupper Caley McGinty from Oklahoma State. Lois Lau will get to face off against McGinty.

The only change to the TCU lineup is Trinity King in the 5 slot instead of Charlotte Cattaneo.

Wow--scores at the Barbara Nicklaus Invitational are crazy high. If the intent of inviting 8 mid-tier teams was to spotlight the challenge of Muirfield Village, task accomplished. Tournament looks like a test of depth--nobody is going low but marginal players will be going very high. For TCU, it highlights the lack of depth after 1-3. But the Frogs still might be competitive--challenge is to keep players mentally engaged during "bad" rounds--posting 82 instead of 86 makes a difference today.

Update: The 36-hole day at Muirfield Village has mercifully ended. I can't imagine that many of the 40 players had fun. Average score through two rounds: 81.6.

TCU is +56 and...tied for the lead with Maryland. The Frogs have 3 players in the top 12, including freshman Sofia Barroso Sá, who is solo second at +5, two shots off the lead and 6 shots ahead of third. She shot an even-par 72 in the second round. You won't see many rounds that beat the field average by more than 8 shots. (Justin Gums had one last year on the men's side.) Congrats to Sofia.

One more round of bludgeoning tomorrow.

Through 36 holes at Colonial, TCU men are T10 at +10. They are only 3 shots clear of 15th, though, so they'll need to do more work tomorrow. Teams chasing them include Oklahoma and Florida. That's some heat.

We had hoped to see good performances from the hometown boys, but it was the Euros who did the work for the Frogs today. Frimodt is T7 (-3) and Oleson T12 (-1).

They have good company, as the top-10 amateurs in the field are solo 2nd, T3, T3, T10, T12 and T35 (UT's Vick).

Winner! Sofia Barroso Sá wins in just her second collegiate event. Under final-round pressure, she limited the damage on a tough Muirfield Village course and wins by 2 shots with a 229 total (+13). Two events, two individual trophies for TCU women, following Caitlyn Macnab's win last week.

Tulsa wins the team title; Frogs finish third behind Maryland.

Lois Lau just misses out on her second-straight top-10 finish; she ends up T11.

Congrats to Sophia!

Winner X 2! TCU's Gustav Frimodt wins the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invite by one shot with a final-round 65 for his first collegiate title. Starting 3 back on hole 10, he birdied 10, 12 and 14, then went eagle-birdie on holes 1 & 2 before a closing bogey at 9.

It's also his second top-10 in a row. Gustav will see his amateur ranking (currently 222) improve considerably, given the strong field. He beat top-10 ranked Sargent (T3), Greaser (T3), Menante (T8), Aberg (T8), Thorbjornsen (T8) and Vick (T31).

Also in a tie for eighth was TCU's Jacob Skov Oleson.

The Frogs finished T9 as a team, which is impressive considering that the top 8 included 7 teams that advanced to match play in last year's NCAAs, plus the 2019 national champs, Stanford. (North Carolina won impressively by 9 over Tech.) TCU also beat powerhouse Oklahoma (by 4) -- can't recall the last time TCU beat the Sooners over 54 holes of stroke play; they also beat perennial powers Wake Forest and Georgia, and tied Florida.

You hope the Frogs will hold their own on their home course, and those top two finishers certainly did. The result will help the Frogs' ranking all season.

Not sure if TCU has ever had men's and women's event winners on the same day. A special day.

Congrats, Gustav!

Great win for Gustav! That was a very high quality field in the individual race.

BTW, Biondi is #20 and Mouw is ranked #22. More skins on the wall!

I wouldn't be surprised to see Preston Summerhays in the top 25 or 30 by year's end, either. He's just a sophomore.

Brian Denton interviewed Coach Montigel and Gustav Frimodt this week on the Frogs Today show.

Summary:
  • Montigel says that one of the things he is proudest of about his time at TCU is the strength of the scheduling and how it has prepared the team to perform in the postseason.
  • Frimodt says scheduling was among the top things that swung him to TCU (along with coaching fit with both Coach M and Coach Mork).
  • Mork walked with Frimodt for all 54 holes--I got the sense that they expected him to play well.
  • Justin Gums decided to pass up an extra COVID year because of a job opportunity
  • Ben Hogan Collegiate Invite will be at Shady Oaks next 2 years due to Colonial's renovation. Will be interesting to see how the long-hitters navigate 6,200-yard Shady.

Shady Oaks is 6,925 yards. At least that’s what the card says. Were you being sarcastic?

TCU women are on the course at the Illini Invitational at Medinah--their second illustrious club in as many weeks. They are playing the #2 course, not the #3 that has been the site of a number of Western Opens and will host the 2026 Presidents Cup. Still, it's great to see prominent clubs getting more engaged in college golf, especially on the women's side.

The 15-team field features 5 SEC teams, 4 Big 12 teams, 3 Big Ten teams and 2 west coast teams. A strong finish will be helpful for TCU, as events with geographically diverse fields tend to be influential in team rankings because of the cross-regional comparisons.

Speaking of rankings, the first set of 2022-23 Golfstat team rankings will be out today (edit) tomorrow. Will be interesting to see where TCU lands on both the women's and men's side.

Frog lineup switches in Cattaneo and switches out King. TCU is paired with host Illinois and Oklahoma State. Follow scoring at:
