Men's and women's golf is officially on for Fall 2020.
The TCU women have had their 20-21 schedule posted on GoFrogs.com for a couple of weeks. The men have yet to post a schedule but put up a link on Sunday to qualifying scores for the Colonial Collegiate Invitational. Not much about that event on the web except that West Virginia lists it as being hosted by TCU at Colonial on Sept. 28-29.
The men have everybody back from last year's young squad, plus three newcomers. Sophomore Jacob Skov Olesen (not to be confused with fellow Dane and 5-time European Tour winner Jacob Thorbjørn Olesen) was the juco player of the year last season at Ranger College. Brandon Massey is a true frosh from FW Arlington Heights, and Spencer Ball is a super-senior transfer from Mercer. Expect Olesen and Ball to both compete for playing time out of the gate; Olesen is tied atop the qualifying leaderboard with Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira.
The women are set to play four fall events, all in Texas and Oklahoma. They begin with the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Sept. 27-28. They have five spring tournaments scheduled ahead of the Big 12 tournament, including Napa, San Diego and Scottsdale. Nothing this year in Mexico or Puerto Rico, as in the past.
The women look to be very solid this year, returning everyone (including super-senior Greta Bruner) and adding highly rate frosh Lois Lau, along with Sabrina Nguyen. Expect Lau, Iqbal, King and Park to be starters, with healthy competition for the fifth slot.
Will be interesting to see the level of competition--of the top teams when play was suspended last season, 11 of the top 20 teams on the men's side and 8 of the top 11 on the women's side are in conferences that have cancelled fall sports (PAC, ACC, B1G, MAC, MWC, WCC).
To make up for the loss, the Golf Coaches Association of America and Golfstat have conspired to host the GCAA Amateur series for college golfers at affected schools. Two 54-hole events are already in the books and two more take place this week, with co-ed fields of 60-84 players. Men and women are paired together and appear on the same leaderboard, but play from different tees. Gender-specific results are recognized for ranking purposes by the World Amateur Golf Rankings. I guess that will also allow Golfstat to process individual player rankings but not team rankings.
