Salem Statesman Journal: Beavers need to figure out how to stop the run

James Day

There were two numbers that jumped out at me after reading the statistics from Oregon State's 30-21 loss Saturday to TCU: 278 and 18.

That's 278 yards rushing by the Horned Frogs, including 17 for 134 yards (a 7.9 average) by 5-9, 200-pound running back Ed Wesley. Bad sign. The Beavers allowed an average of 114.4 yards per game rushing last season and held seven teams to less than 100. They allowed more than 200 twice and lost both games (to USC and Oregon).

How about 18? That was the number of tackles (nine solo and nine assisted) by Beavers safety Lance Mitchell. Another bad sign. When a safety makes that many tackles it means that ballcarriers are getting into the secondary virtually unscathed. ...

Well, I have serious doubts that any left-coast team could ever run the option as well as a Texas team. Don't see the Beavers giving it up like that for the rest of the year.
