Newport News Daily Press: Playoff advocates need better spokesman than Joe Barton

David Teel

This morning we shamefully confess agreement with Joe Barton.

No, not with his outrageous apology to BP CEO/Stooge Tony Hayward. With his contention that major college football needs to scrap the Bowl Championship Series in favor of a playoff.

A Republican congressman from Texas, Barton this weekend told The Associated Press that the recent conference realignment madness proves the financial viability of a playoff. ...

I don't see why people are getting their panties in a bunch about what Joe Barton said about BP. He is right, the $20 billion IS a slush fund and this IS a shakedown. We have already heard about some of that $20 billion going to some restaraunt in Boston so he is already verified.

Repeat the Big Lie often enough, and people begin to believe it. Barton is simply the latest fellow to get the Media Smear for telling an obvious truth. Heresy against The Messiah will not be tolerated!

As to Barton's stance on a playoff, he is again correct. The problem becomes, who winds up on the selection committee? Some Big XII stooge? The cartel controls matters now. If a miracle comes to pass and a playoff is set up, the cartel will simply make sure that they fill all the spots on the selection committee.

The fix will continue to be in.

BrewingFrog is correct in the biggest problem with a playoff. I have been a playoff supporter since the 1980s, but it would be too easy to for the big boys to stack it with their cronies to ensure only the big boys get in. CGP has stated that this is his big concern with a playoff: that it would be less open than the current system.

Of course, having a 16-team playoff would advert most of the problems associated with the 8-team playoff. But that is why it will never happen.

And people throwing in the towel and saying it will never happen are part of the probelm. We need to take our game back. It's got to be a 16 team playoff, with conference champs from a minimum 8 conferences included. This would give the big conferences potentially another 8 participants in addition to their champions. Anything less than this, we should all scream bloody murder, and we should put the onus on the Presidents to control it properly rather than turning it over to six elite conferences. Also, anything less and Congress should take away federal tax exempt status.

What? We're not screaming bloody murder already? Maybe "Stop! Thief!!!"

If a Playoff is floated, who do you think will float it? PBS?

ESPN/ABC are in the drivers seat on the formation of any potential playoff because, in the end, they are the ones writing the check for it. ESPN/ABC will go for the existing structure because they are comfortable with it and because they wrongly believe that only the Big Schools will garner the ratings commensurate with the check they would have to write. Besides, they already own the BCS and most of the other Bowl games. Why mess up what they already have?

We in the Have Not crowd can scream all we want. They simply are not listening...

Kind of like the current mess with the baseball selection comittee, and the fellow heading it up....a stooge from the Big 12 Lite. IMO, Texas and TCU should never have to meet in the Super Regional if they both have seasons like they did this year. 5 of the 8 seeded teams didn't make it to CWS, but they dang sure got to host a Super regional. BTW, why was Florida ranked #3? Hmmmm

Texas probably won't let that happen again, TCU showing up at their regional. They likely will send us some place like Seattle, hoping nobody will notice us and hoping we go down early.

ABC and ESPN subordinates are a bunch of money whores who care nothing about the great game. Talking football with that last reference. But baseball is no different...

Barton went out of his way to support TCU and fight the corrupt BCS. He's an aggie, so he was standing on principle. He wasn't tactical (BP) enough in his outspoken but truthful stance. I kinda' like that.
