I went to high school with Charlie and his brothers in the tiny east central Texas town of Wortham. He is from a very large family. I was a junior when he was a freshman. Charlie is truly one of the nicest people I have ever known. His whole family was wonderful. We integrated our school that year, so things were a bit strange. I remember the day he walked into the Bulldogs’ crappy locker room. We were struggling with some weights. Charlie walked over and snatched them up over his head with no effort at all. Our very short coach of all sports and Principle, Jimmy Campbell, walked up to Charlie, looked up, and said “Son, where do you want to play?” One game, at halftime, the coach from the other team told Campbell that Charlie was decimating his team and would not take the field for the second half if coach put Charlie back on the field. Coach didn’t start him start him that half, but he put Charlie back in the second play. Awesome!
I was at TCU with Charlie, as well. One of the funniest things I can remember is seeing that hulk of a man walk around campus with that tiny freshman beanie on his head.
Something very interesting on the ticket. Look at the price. $1.00. There is nothing on the campus now that you can purchase for $1.00, let alone a ticket to the Carter. Good times...
