Travin Howard happened to walk up Jones Stadium’s southeast tunnel in front of me Saturday, his No. 32 TCU jersey stretched over his torso, but otherwise in street clothes. The talented linebacker who’s leading the Horned Frogs in tackles for the third year in a row made the trip to Lubbock, but didn’t play.

Neither did senior quarterback Kenny Hill, leading rusher Darius Anderson or starting safety Niko Small.

In Hill’s case, he’s reportedly dealing with concussion symptoms and didn’t get on the plane out here.

So Gary Patterson had to confront an uncomfortable scenario he’d never encountered in 17 seasons as TCU head coach: Starting a true freshman quarterback.
