NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- TCU safety Tejay Johnson has been named to the watch list for the 2010 Lott Trophy.

Sponsored by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, the award is given to a player who exhibits the same characteristics Ronnie Lott embodied during his distinguished Hall of Fame playing career: integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity.

TCU two-time consensus All-America defensive end Jerry Hughes was last year's Lott Trophy recipient.

Johnson, who will be in his third year as a starter, was an All-Mountain West Conference selection last season. He placed fourth on TCU's nation-leading defense with 59 tackles, including a career best and TCU season-high 14 stops in a 38-7 win at BYU. It was the most tackles in a game by a Horned Frog since Marvin White totaled 14 against Baylor in 2006.

A senior from Garland, Texas, Johnson tied for TCU's team lead with three interceptions.

Johnson is a habilitation of the deaf/hard of hearing major. He mentors middle school kids, volunteers at a homeless shelter and participates in Big Brothers/Big Sisters events. Among a myriad of campus involvement, Johnson is a member of TCU's gospel choir and the secretary and historian for the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

Voters for the Lott Trophy include selected members of the national media, previous finalists, members of the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation Board of Directors, the Legends Coaches and distinguished alumni of various schools around the nation. The winner, who will be announced at the annual black-tie gala in December, receives $25,000 for his school's general scholarship fund.

Wow. Johnson sounds like a well-rounded student athlete. I hope he brings lightning and thunder onto opposing offenses next season.

Or, just good tackling, that'll do.

He sounds like a great role model. Plus, he knows how to kickky the buttocks on the field.

Give me as many of those fine young men as we can get. We all should be proud of him, win or lose.
