Texas lawmakers, universities seek a path for Big 12 without UT, OU

As the University of Texas prepares for a jump from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference, state lawmakers are working to determine how the move will affect the rest of the state — and whether they might be able to intervene in such a move in the future.
The first hearing of the Senate special committee on the future of college sports in Texas on Monday produced more questions than answers. Legislators, economists and representatives of the universities left behind brainstormed how the Big 12 could remain viable — perhaps by adding up-and-coming Texas programs such as the University of Houston and Southern Methodist University.
