Lubbock, Texas – The TCU women's tennis team moved to 6-3 in conference play after falling short to No. 28 Texas Tech 4-3 on Thursday evening at McLeod Tennis Center.
LEE'S THOUGHTS
"What a thriller of a match," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "Very proud of the way our team responded after doubles. There was not much confidence to have after doubles, but our team showed a lot of grit and dominated the majority of singles. Momentum, though not tangible, is such an obvious thing when experiencing it. We really had them on their heels and I was confident it was a done deal. But credit to their 4 for fighting back and flipping that match."
"Then it all came down to court one where the level was very high from both players and really neither deserved to lose. I'm so proud of Jade- her growth, her composure and how she's matured so much through the years. She's a great player and great teammate. This team has always learned from their losses very fast and used what they learned to make an incredible impact on the next match. I have no doubt that the same will happen this week. We have turned the page and already looking forward to another battle at a very good BYU team. It's fun to compete with this team and our best is yet to come."
THE RUNDOWN
The match began in doubles play where Yu-Chin Tsai and Chiho Mushika put up a strong fight against the nations No. 6 doubles pair of Metka Komac and Acelina Sayfetfinova before ultimately falling 6-3. The Cougars secured the doubles point with a 6-1 win on court two.
The match ramped up when singles play began. Helena Narmont was first off the court with her eighth win of the season coming from court six (6-1, 6-3). Raquel Caballero Chica came up short on court five making the score 2-1, Texas Tech.
Destinee Martins moved to 8-2 on the season in straight sets winning 6-3, 6-4 on court two. Isabel Pascual clutched up on court three to give the Horned Frogs the first lead of the night 3-2. The senior won her first set 6-3 then fell 6-1 in set two before coming back to finish off her opponent 6-3 in set three.
Tsai fell in a heartbreaker on court four to tie up the match 3-3. Jade Otway battled with the No. 55 singles player in the nation through three sets. The junior lost the first set 6-4 before coming back in a tiebreak to win 7-6(2) in set two. In the final set of the night the pair was back and forth until Otway ultimately fell to Cristina Tiglea in a gutsy performance 7-6(9).
