GoFrogs: TCU Powers Past Colgate, 3-0

FORT WORTH -- TCU volleyball jumped all over Colgate in the opening set on its way to a convincing 3-0 sweep inside The Rickel on Thursday evening. TCU racked up 53 kills in just three sets of work to take down the Patriot League co-champions and advance to the NIVC semifinals: 25-17, 25-23, 30-28.

"I'm really proud of my team for playing so hard tonight," head coach Jill Kramer said. "This tournament has been awesome for us. We've been able to put together some really good performances by our whole team. To see them come together tonight, seeing Julia [Adams] step up and bring it was pretty awesome. When it comes to our serving performance, we were consistently hitting the zones that we wanted to with pace. It was one of the most consistent performances we've had all season with that, which shows they're pretty locked in. That's what you want right now."

TCU NOTABLES:
  • TCU finished with 53 kills – the most in a three-set match since August 30, 2014, vs. William & Mary.
  • McKenzie Nichols posted her third double-double of the NIVC with 41 assists and 11 digs. It was her third 40+ assist performance in a three-set match and second straight.
  • Nichols leads the team with nine double-doubles this season, including six in which she tallied 40+ assists.
  • Nichols also led the team in digs for the third time this season.
  • Julia Adams led the offense with 17 kills in just three sets, including nine in the final set, the most kills in a single set by a Horned Frog this season.
  • It was her second 10+ kill match of the NIVC and seventh in her last nine showings.
  • Adams also led the team in hitting percentage, posting a stellar .467 mark. Her highest since hitting .500 on 23 kills against Kansas earlier in the season (Nov. 9)
  • Katie Clark stayed hot in postseason play, finishing with 12 kills and three blocks in the middle. She is now averaging 3.18 kills/set and 2.09 blocks/set in the tournament.
  • Clark has posted 10+ kills in 16 matches this season, the most on the team.
  • Audrey Nalls delivered 11 kills on the night, her second straight double-digit kill match and 11th such match of the season.
  • Clark and Adams combined to lead the team in blocks, each finishing with three.
  • TCU advances to the NIVC semifinals for the second time in the last three seasons (2017).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (TCU, 25-17): Colgate managed an early 5-6 lead before the Horned Frogs seized momentum with a 7-0 run, fueled by two kills from Ashley Waggle and two solo blocks from Nalls. With a 12-6 lead in hand, TCU cruised to an eight-point victory. Clark led the way with five kills on .500 hitting with Adams close behind at four kills. As a team, TCU held Colgate to just .086 hitting while posting an impressive .324 hitting percentage to set the tone for the match.

Set 2 (TCU 25-23): The offense toned down in the second set as both teams battled through errors. An early 6-1 TCU run put the home team in front, 8-4, a lead that would never be relinquished. TCU went up by as many as seven points when Clark and Nichols combined for a block to put the Horned Frogs in front, 18-11. Colgate would fight back, drawing within one point, 24-23, before Nalls put the set to bed with her fifth kill of the match. The visiting Raiders were held to .000 hitting in the set, the fifth time TCU has held an opponent to .000 or less hitting in a set. Adams led the team with four kills on .500 hitting. Clark posted three blocks.

Set 3 (TCU, 30-28): With their season on the line, the Raiders entered the third set with a new energy, jumping in front, 8-4. TCU remained composed and chipped away at the lead, winning seven of the next 10 points to tie the score at 11. A 4-0 run put the Horned Frogs in front, 18-15 due to a kill from Adams and an ace by Nichols. The Raiders battled back to tie it again and eventually earn the first set-point, 23-24. Clark squashed the upset effort with a kill before Adams gave TCU its first match-point on the next play, 25-24. Colgate would win the next two points to reach the brink once more, 25-26 but Nalls had the answer, allowing Adams to once more force match-point, 27-26. The Raiders forced another tie when Adams came through to put TCU on the precipice again, 28-27. Colgate tied the match with a kill but a clutch attack from Sarah Swanson forced TCU's fourth match point. Dani Dennison wasted no time this go-round, depositing an ace in the teeth of the Raider defense to polish off the sweep. TCU finished with 24 kills on .259 hitting in the set, led by nine from Adams on .500 hitting. Nalls stepped up in the third set once again, posting six kills. Nichols was dealing throughout the set, delivering 18 assists while leading the team with six digs.
