GoFrogs: TCU Rallies in Ninth, Tops GCU 3-2
Final Stats
PHOENIX – No. 3 TCU scored three runs in the ninth to rally from a 2-0 deficit to top Grand Canyon 3-2 on Opening Night in the newly renovated GCU Ballpark. Josh Watson was the offensive hero with a two-run triple in the ninth.
The Rundown Coby Boulware got the ninth inning rally started with a line drive base hit up the middle. Connor Wanhanen worked a nine-pitch walk to put the tying runs on base. With one out, Watson lined a triple down the right field line to tie the game at two. Zach Humphreys followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Horned Frogs the lead.
Durbin Feltman came on in the ninth and shut it down as he retired the side in order for his first save of the season. Cal Coughlin (1-0) picked up the win in relief with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Jared Janczak was outstanding in his second career Opening Day start. The junior fanned 11 and issued two walks while allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Grand Canyon struck first in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of a lead-off walk. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Ian Evans grounded out to give the Lopes a 1-0 lead.
TCU had a couple of chances to tie the game before the ninth. In the fifth, Humphreys was stranded at third after leading off the inning with a base hit. The Frogs looked like they had tied the game in the seventh, but an interference call resulted in an inning-ending double play to keep the Grand Canyon lead intact.
In the bottom of the inning, the Lopes opened up a 2-0 lead on a bases-loaded, two-out wild pitch. Coughlin kept the damage at a minimum setting up the Frogs’ ninth inning rally.
