GoFrogs: Errors Prove Costly In Loss

Final Stats

PHOENIX – Two errors in the bottom of the 12th helped Grand Canyon rally for the 9-8 victory over No. 3 TCU on Sunday afternoon at Grand Canyon Ballpark. In the loss, Luken Baker hit his first home run of the season.

The Rundown
TCU looked in control of the game after tallying a pair of runs in the top of the 12th. Three walks loaded the bases with nobody out. Zach Humphreys broke the 6-6 tie with a base hit to left. A bases-loaded walk to Adam Oviedo pushed the lead to 8-6.

It wasn’t to be as the Lopes took advantage of two costly errors in the bottom of the frame to score three times. The lead-off batter reached on an error. Four batters later, the game was tied at two. Austin Boyles came on and got two quick outs and looked to be out of the inning with the game tied, but an errant throw allowed the winning run to score.

Grand Canyon opened the scoring in the bottom of the third as it took advantage of a lead-off single. Ian Evans’ two-out double gave the Lopes a 1-0 lead. With one swing of the bat, Luken Baker tied the game at one as he launched his first home run of the season over the left center field fence in the fourth.

The Lopes put up five runs over the next two innings to open up a 6-1 advantage. GCU took the lead in the fourth on a two-out single from Griffin Barnes. In the fifth, an error allowed one run to score, but the big blow was a three-run home run from Cuba Bess.

In the sixth, A.J. Balta’s RBI-double started the Frogs on the path to the comeback. Two walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch, a balk along with an error helped the Frogs score four times in the seventh to tie the game at six. Josh Watson was the lone Frog to pick up an RBI in the flurry of activity.

From there, the bullpens went to work, keeping the game scoreless until the 12th. Haylen Green pitched two perfect innings, followed by 1 2/3 perfect innings for Cal Coughlin. Durbin Feltman walked one and struck out four in his two innings on the mound. Charles King (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) in 1+ innings of work.
