Is it too late for TCU to turn it around and make a March Madness run?

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – TCU accomplished its primary goal of cementing itself as a NCAA Tournament team in the Big 12 tournament with a win over Oklahoma on Wednesday.

That is the sole reason the 60-45 defeat to Houston in the quarterfinal round may not sting too much. Defeating the No. 1 team in the country was always going be a massive challenge. Since the Cougars started their impressive run under Kelvin Sampson in 2017, the 2021-22 Memphis team is only program to beat Houston twice in the same season.

That Tigers team had a NBA Draft lottery pick (Jalen Duren), another NBA guard in Lester Quinones, a 25-year old all-conference forward plus a roster that was filled with two No. 1 recruiting classes. In other words, there’s no shame in not being able to sweep the Cougars, but the defeat itself is yet another troubling outcome over the last few weeks for TCU.

Aggies beat Ole Miss and have now moved up to the “last four in” so SEC now has 8 tournament teams. Aggies play Kentucky today.

The Big East has 5 of their 11 schools in, with a possible 7 in as Providence is in “first four out” and Villanova is in “next four out.” UConn, Shaka Smart’s Marquette and Creighton are 1, 2 and 3 seeds.

The Mountain West has 5 of their 11 teams in, with a possible 6th as New Mexico is one of the “first four out.”

The Buffs and Big Eddie Lampkin play #22 Washington State tonight in a big game at 9:30 central on FS1. Colorado has won 7 in a row. The Buffs, 23-9 (13-7), are currently one of the last four in, so if they beat Washington State tonight that should lock the Buffs in. Go Buffs!

Dixon stated after the Sooner win that the key for his team versus Houston would be rebound, rebound, rebound. They did that, so they are listening.

The final TCU funny numbers yesterday versus Houston - 30 offensive rebounds, 55 total, 73 shots, but made only 17 (23%) and scored only 45. Ten more rebounds than points - crazy stats.

At one point the Frogs had 22 offensive rebounds with only 15 points, having made only 7 of 45 shots. I don’t think TCU scored their first 2 points until 10:20 left in the first half.

Maybe rebounding is a Houston vulnerability.

Who gives a rats azz about the 21-22 Memphis Tigers?? We were one of three teams to beat #1 Houston this season. Yesterday was ugly but come on.

We have played 5 poor halves out of the last 6. I could see us winning 1 game, but I can't see us putting together 2 good games in a row.
Going back to the game in Lubbock we've absolutely tanked from a solid winning position three times. We were at best unconvincing vs. Baylor and Houston, and played well enough to win at WVU, and vs. Cincinnati and OU. That's 3-5 in the last eight games, having played at most eight halves of good basketball (nine if you count the second half vs. OU as good basketball because we won, but we didn't score a FG in a six minute span and missed a bunch of FTs).

It's not that it's too late for this team, it's that they aren't good enough.

Don’t disagree. I see the problem as being in an extremely tough league with very talented coaches and players, a league that has made a conscious decision to be the most physical league in basketball, and has developed a group of officials to accommodate that. That is fine and probably good for the league. We just have not fully made that transition. Athleticism and aggression as seen in UH puts them in very elite company. We certainly aren’t there yet, we are middling within a great league, fairly competitive outside our league.

Got to play well the entire game just not a half.

The Houston game yesterday was different from when we played them earlier in the year. Yesterday they did not call many fouls and let Houston get away with a whole bunch. Earlier in the year the game was called closer, and we were able to win. Refs do dictate winning and losing games.

Why should Tech be a lower seed than BYU? And Kansas? Better overall and conference record and advanced further in conf tourney.
