With the college basketball season over, now we can turn our attention to the games that really matter: Conference realignment, and the exact time of the ACC’s implosion.

As much as this topic exhausts and irritates fans who just want to watch the games, those who put them on nervously propose a variety of just-in-case scenarios around the country. These aren’t “Doomsday” scenarios, but rather a series of potential “What If” chess moves.

We all now live on the SEC and Big 10’s chess board. This includes you, NCAA. Even if you’re not a King or a Queen on this board, you’re OK with being a rook or a pawn, too. Looking at you, Nebraska.

If TCU shovels NIL dollars toward hoops to try to keep up with Kansas, Duke and Zona, won't football suffer? I mean there's only so much money.

College football is heading for a merger of the B10 and SEC in 24 months or less. That entity will basically control broadcasts of the college football industry, and will very heavily favor the two biggies, to the detriment of other conferences, who will be relegated to picking up the crumbs. Basketball is the only major college sport that has much of a future outside the "Big Two" conferences. Since whatever's left of B12 football will be on the outside looking in after the 2025 season, it's a good marketing (survival?) strategy to play its strongest hand, which is basketball.

EDIT: Muck Face thinks the King is one of the most important pieces on the board. Freaking genius!
