Texas Christian University and Colonial Country Club are partnering on a training center for the school’s men’s and women’s golf programs.

As part of Colonial Country Club’s $21 million course and clubhouse renovation, a training center and practice facility will be constructed for use by the school’s athletes.

Jeremiah Donati, TCU’s director of intercollegiate athletics, announced the partnership in an October newsletter.

According to a filing with the state of Texas, the 6,953-square-foot practice facility will cost $4.3 million and is expected to be completed by July 2024. According to the newsletter, the training center will contain a long and short game practice facility and a student-athlete lounge.

I wonder how many other school's across this nation, get to play on a PGA tour golf course everyday? Anybody know of any others?

I have thought that this kind of facility is what TCU to take the next step. More that most sports golf (and tennis) depend on recruiting talent that is ready to play at a high level NOW.

Plus this gives a place for the players to practice when the weather is bad. And in DFW that can be a lot: too hot, too cold, too wet to practice well.

Well, TCU doesn't get to play there every day, but it is a bonus to have access to a PGA Tour course for a few days a week. UH can play at Memorial Park (and the other courses that have hosted the Houston Open). UTSA can play at the course that hosts the Texas Open, and SMU can play at the TPC at Craig Ranch. Oklahoma State plays at Oak Tree, which has hosted a PGA Championship and a Senior PGA Championship. Stanford plays a little at Olympic. UCLA occasionally plays at Riviera. Georgia Tech can play at East Lake. Ohio State at Muirfield Village. Texas has access to Austin Country Club. I could go on and on.

The big recruiting advantage has been at schools that have dedicated practice facilities at courses they own/manage. There are a number of them -- the Rawls Course at Texas Tech comes to mind. UT has a golf course, Okie State has Karsten Creek, OU has Jimmie Austin, Notre Dame has the Warren Course. Ohio State, Michigan, Virginia, Florida, Duke, UNC, Stanford, Georgia, Clemson, Vanderbilt and Penn State all have excellent courses with dedicated practice facilities. Some of those courses rival (or even exceed) Colonial in design, turf conditions and challenge, but give more access to the players.

One infrequent-but-in-the-know poster noted a while back that TCU is the only Power 5 golf program without a dedicated practice facility. Kudos to ADJD for removing that handicap to recruiting. (More here about the arms race in college golf facilities.) An indoor facility within 3 minutes of campus will save the teams significant time vs. going out to Leonard's, but more importantly, it gives the players a place of their own, instead of feeling like moochers reliant on access doled out by various clubs.

It’s good they got a facility but this is not very well thought out and still very far behind what other programs have. Until colonial cuts their membership in half course access will be an issue for tcu golf.
