Fanrag: Mets sign Matt Purke

By Alex Kolodziej

The New York Mets have signed left-handed pitcher Matt Purke to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league spring training, the team announced on Friday.

Purke is a former third-round pick of the Washington Nationals in 2011. He was originally drafted by the Texas Rangers with pick No. 14 in 2009 but wound up forgoing his signing and instead pitched at TCU, where he went 21-1 over his first two seasons with the Horned Frogs.

In 2013 across two affiliates, he posted a 4.50 ERA over 18 starts at the Single-A and Advanced Single-A levels. The following season, he was limited to eight starts and finished 1-6 with an 8.04 ERA and 1.915 WHIP. He was released, but signed on to a minors deal thereafter.
