How does ESPN not schedule one prime time game for 1/2 but manages to schedule multiple 11 am / noon games on what is a work day for most people.

Because they're scheissing stupid, but in this case it's because Sundays are reserved for the NFL.

Monday, Jan 2 is "reserved" (by agreement with colleges) for the NFL: Buffalo vs Cinci 8:30pmEST. So CFP is required to be "dark" that night.
Jan 2 is a National Holiday: New Years Day (Observed) by the Fed Gov. (no banks, fed reserve, stock market, post office, govt offices all closed.) Most employers follow this pattern and if Cmas day (on a Sunday in 2022) and likewise NYD for 2023, the holiday observance is the following Monday.

Not a bad point but
see the above point about the bengals vs bills. Valid point but you’d think they could at least have one prime time bowl game.

Aside from the reasons stated above why would ESPN want to compete against itself? If you have gotten to January 2 and not seen enough bowl games then that’s your problem. Also if you don’t have that day off you may want to change employers

It’s that the best bowl games would be played on the 2nd since the 1st on a Sunday. Cotton bowl would be so much better in the evening and espn would be minimizing the cannibalism by having mnf compete against one bowl game rather than three bowl games competing against each other.

Ask yourself one question. What is more important and pays more to ESPN A meaningless bowl game or the NFL? As a wise man once said the answer to all your questions is money

Meaningless is in the eye of the beholder. There are a lot of college football fans out there who see an nfl game that decides 1st or 2nd round home field advantage as essentially meaningless.

Maybe meaningless to you but to the bean counters in Bristol not so much. Trust me they’re sweating the Rose Bowl going OT. Trust me no one who doesn’t get paid for it watches more college football than I do and even I know the NFL drives the broadcasting bus
