Grand Canyon’s Head Coach was on Tuesday’s College Baseball Now podcast. Frogs open at GCU next weekend. This will be the Antelopes’ first season to be eligible for the NCAA D1 postseason. They won the D2 national championship in 2013 then went into a 4-year D1 transition where they were ineligble for postseason. They won the WAC Regular Season Championship in both 2015 and 2017, so they quickly performed competitively at the D1 level.

Podcast is worth a listen and subscription. Each episode is just a different head coach. There’s a recent-ish one with Holladay from OSU

I am not a D1 Baseball subscriber, but just before the paywall hits, there was a nice nugget about Janczak being #3 on their "statistics-based ranking" of pitchers....

Not surprisingly, polished strike-throwers like righthanders Jared Janczak (TCU) and Colton Eastman (Cal State Fullerton) made big jumps from their position in our Top 100. Janczak is a prime example of an analytics darling: he was the 37th-ranked pitcher on our Top 100, but he jumps to No. 3 on our statistics-based ranking of the top pitchers.

Here's a bit about how they compile their stats-based rankings...

Jan Moffett said:
Criteria for pitchers were broken into three categories: Zone Control (K%, BB%, HB+WP%), Pitchability (ERA, WHIP, OppAVG, OppSLG), and Durability (GS and IP). Players’ scores were weighted by their school’s strength of schedule to correct for varying levels of difficulty within Division I.

D1 Baseball also has a podcast up with Kendall Rodgers and Aaron Fitt with some picks for the Big 12, ACC, SEC and Pac-12.

Podcast: Breaking Down The Powers

https://d1baseball.com/podcasts/podcast-breaking-powers/

They discuss the Big 12 first, which begins around the 2:20 mark, talking about Oklahoma State, Kansas, and Baylor.

At the 8:15 mark they talk about their picks for Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, and Freshman of the Year, which leads into a TCU discussion primarily centered around Baker and Adam Oviedo and some of the other freshmen/newcomers.

At the 11 minute mark they start discussing Texas Tech, and 12:15 they mention breakout candidates.

For the TCU part of their discussion, Luken Baker was picked for Player of the Year, Adam Oviedo was chosen for Freshman of the Year.

In the discussion of TCU, said they liked a lot of their young guys. Said Coby Boulware was impressive, also said transfer Conner Sheperd was impressive. About Oviedo, said he was a really smooth at shortstop, good instincts, good tools, can add bulk, solid defender up the middle...and TCU thinks he can be "pretty solid offensive guy". They mention it's not ideal that they have true freshman at 2B/SS (with Oviedo at SS, and perhaps Coby Boulware or Tristan Hanoian at 2B), but they think Oviedo can have a big year and not be phased by it. Also mention freshman LH pitcher Russell Smith 6'7 or 6'8 was up to 92-93 in the fall...said TCU is sky high on him.

The LHP to watch is more Mihlbauer than Smith IMO.

USA Baseball Announces 2018 Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List

USA Baseball said:
USA Baseball announced its 55-player preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list on Friday, beginning the process of identifying the top amateur baseball player in the country for the 2018 season. The 41st Golden Spikes Award will be presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation on June 28 in Los Angeles.

The preseason watch list features 55 of the nation's top amateur players, from high school and college baseball. The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will maintain a rolling list of players, allowing athletes to play themselves into consideration for the award throughout the season.

Headlining the 2018 watch list is 2016 Golden Spikes Award finalist Seth Beer (Clemson), who has been named to the preseason watch list for the second year in a row, as well as Steven Gingery (Texas Tech) and Nick Madrigal (Oregon State), who were semifinalists for the award in 2017.

In addition to those three athletes, the watch list features seven athletes whom the Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board has recognized in the past. Joining Beer on the preseason watch list for the second consecutive year is Luken Baker (TCU), Colton Eastman (Cal State Fullerton), Madrigal and Jake Mangum (Mississippi State). Joey Bart (Georgia Tech), Gingery, Tyler Holton (Florida State), Nolan Kingham (Texas), Madrigal and Casey Mize (Auburn) were all named to the midseason watch list in 2017.
