College football’s run for the money ended early Tuesday morning. Or did it?

Auburn beat Oregon 22-19 on a last-play field goal and caressed the crystal football symbolizing the BCS title.

If dropped onto almost any surface, even a slippery grass field situated inside an Arizona dome, the crystal will shatter like a fragile treasure. But the NCAA evidently doesn’t fret over broken glass or a broken football system.

The NCAA avoids playoffs at the top level while managing playoffs for non-scholarship Division III, mainly because NCAA members from the six richest conferences and Notre Dame insist on keeping most of the TV money.

The 2010 season stretched 10 days into 2011, but it really won’t end until the NCAA wraps up an investigation of quarterback Cam Newton and his preaching father’s play-for-pay schemes. Despite the 24/7 news cycle of modern times, news still sometimes travels drip by drip and bank record by bank record. ...
