LAS VEGAS — "The waiting is the hardest part," Tom Petty sang in a popular 1980s song.
And for Utah football fans, that rings particularly true this fall as their team finishes out a 12-year run in the Mountain West Conference before moving into the Pacific-12, joining the University of Colorado as new members of the Bowl Championship Series conference.
It would be easy, coach Kyle Whittingham admitted, for his team to get caught up in all the excitement, lose its focus and struggle this fall despite a talented lineup that should challenge TCU for the MWC title. Easy, that is, if the Utes had a different coach, a different schedule, and Whittingham said, a different mentality. ...
