The Big Easy, uh, I mean Big East

I have read most of the threads on your possible invite to the BE and you seem to be more negative and out spoken than some of the other posters .Could you possibly post some FACTS to back up this statement....The BE has been the lowest rated AQ conference for a while...I know this year is bad but otherwise show me some facts.

Based on Sagarin Rankings of each year past, Big East has finished 6th or 7th behind the MWC in rankings. Media, except in the Northeast share this sentiment.

I understand the past is the past, but what has concerned me is the articles I am reading out of the Northeast media is that the teams just need to improve and moving up Nova will cure the conferece's ills. Plus, they seem more concerned about how basketball will be affected. To an outsider, the northeast media's opinions are a bit concerning to me as a TCU fan. It is not my view of the Big East that bothers me but the way the nort east media views the conference that is troubling.

I see the potential in the Big East if it plans wisely and makes the moves to elevate itself. Right now there seems to lack of identity within itself. For me, the ideal situation would be for the 8 all sports members split from the basketball schools and start calling the shots.
I know this is very unlikely to happen currently but the Big East will reach a point when the split will be necessary to survive and thrive.

Not true. Not even this year: Not once in the 6 years we've been a member of the MWC. And in 2009 and 2007, Sagarin had the Big East behind only the SEC ...

Well, maybe I am getting that confused with another conference ranking system posted by the media.

If the Sagarin numbers are to be believed as the true ranking system of a conference, by golly, who knew the Big East was ranked only 2nd behind the SEC. Oh yeah! Whoa, wait a minute, Duq you know this is BS. Are you going to try to sell me so swampland and tell me the Big East in FB is better than the Big 12, the ACC, The bIg 10, ad the PAC 10? Seriously. If you believe that, then all I can say is wow and 95% of the college pundits and media disagree with you.

I am not saying TCU shouldn't join the big East, but rather their conference needs to honestly access their weaknesses and truly improve with expmasion not just add a team. Have a long term vision. I still believe the long term viability of the Big East as BCS conference is that they will need to become an all sports conference for all members which means kissing the BB only school bye bye.

Depends on what you value in a conference. Having kept track of how conferences have done against AQ OOC opponents, aside from this year, the Big East is usually not the worst AQ conference. And while the Big East rarely has four of five in the Top 25 like the SEC or Big 12, but that's as much a function of size as quality (statistically difficult to have half your conference considered among the top 20% in the league) and they also tend to not have the absolute year-in-year-out doormats ... your Baylors, Vanderbilts, Northwesterns. The Big East, including this year, generally has a low statistical variance, which is to say parity. Unlike the MWC or WAC whose member schools run the entire spectrum of college football from top 5 to bottom 5. So when taking a top-to-bottom average, I'm not all that shocked when the Big East isn't rated the worst AQ conference.

Point is, when you look at numbers, it's hard to qualitatively show the Big East is significantly inferior year-in-year-out. Perceptually, sure. But then its the perceptual opinions of people that we're constantly trying to fight too. All I ask is that we try to support the perceptions at least a little with some data ...

Fair enough.

If B E offers an all sports invite, TCU will accept. Our opinions are merely an exercise and nothing more in the end.

Babyface, you are thinking of espn's conference rankings. I don't have the link but the Mwc and WAC are rated ahead of the acc and the big east this year

That's exactly the problem. ESPN's opinion is some idiot writer's opinion and based on nothing. You know what the say about opinions, everybody got one. Frankly, computer rankings are far more relative than some idiot's opinion on a blog. Sagarin is far more relative to me than some moron on a blog who is judging teams based on names on the front of the jersey and not on field performance.

BE is nowhere close to as bad as people think. If TCU does get an invite, TCU will find that out very soon. One of the key measures about BCS conferences is head to head games. BE has fared very well against all other BCS conferences including the SEC outside this year.

I really hope people bring some data to a discussion vs. just keep repeating the same unfair negative press that has nothing to do with real data.
