Schools are prohibited from publicizing any recruitment of any athlete until that athlete signs a LOI. See the NCAA rule book. It's not allowed.
 
Coaches "leak" information sometimes. But mostly, it comes from those who cover recruiting contacting kids or kids publicizing who is offering them, where they're visiting, etc.

I think he ended up playing baseball for the Mets farm organization back in the 80's.

No.  That's not what I heard. Patterson said the silent-commit had flipped from a major program (think SEC) and was still apparently "committed" to the other school.  I thought he was talking about Sullivan at the time but I was told that was not who he was talking about.  Can't say any more until after signing day. FWIW, I don't believe the name I heard was true.
