The Los Angeles Chargers ' past regime selected Quentin Johnston with the No. 21 overall pick in 2023, believing they had found their future top wide receiver for years to come. As they should've since Johnston was coming off of a 1,069-yard, six-touchdown season at TCU prior to entering the draft.

Two seasons in and the Chargers have made a grave mistake. Johnston, who had inconsistent hands coming into the league, displayed those issues throughout his short career thus far. It was especially evident this season, when Johnston had multiple games with numerous drops.

Herbert picks a favorite receiver each game it seems. QJ has a record day and then nothing. Herbert gets the blame!
When Herbert came out in 2019/'20 he was labeled in NFL Scouting reports as having multiple mechanical throwing issues by multiple outlets. I think his pure physical talent has been overriding this since he entered the league. You may ask why L Mcconkey can catch so many more passes and you have to think that it has something to do with throwing trajectory to a 5'11" guy versus a 6'4" guy.

I think after watching the Texans Chargers Game, this contest probably exposed Herberts biggest deficiency coming out of Oregon. He was labeled as a having very little killer instinct. Boiled down this means inability to focus from week to week. Just Like Chad Hennings the DT from the Cowboys did in '92 to '93... going to see a sports shrink is what Herbert needs to do. Chad Hennings went from barely being able to fit into the cockpit of an F-16 and whiffing on multiple tackles in the early 90s to being a key key contributor to those Superbowl runs.

QJ & Hebert both need to get better if the chargers are gonna move up in the AFC. QJ needs to run better routes & get more separation & JH needs to hit the target more consistently. He seems to miss high quite a bit.

I bet both of them will be better next year as Harbaugh continues to build his offense. The LA passing game will be even better when they get their power run game going stronger in 2025. I can see JH using play action & going deep to QJ a lot more in the future.

I agree with that assessment.

Agreed. There just seems to be something missing with Herbert, and as for QJ, from what I can tell he is easily run off his routes by physical play. Does fine when there is plenty of space but when a DB challenges him he tends to run away from the contact instead of using his hands to fight through it like the great route runners do. He'll float around in no man's land quite a bit when there is man coverage. That's just what this armchair QB sees. And then there is the hands, but I think he'll always struggle with drops, teams will just have to live with it.

Sounds like there may not be a "next year" for him.
