SAN DIEGO -- New Mexico got the last breaks over BYU Tuesday, winning 5-4 in 11 innings to open the Mountain West Conference baseball tournament.

BYU turned six double plays, but a pinch-hit home run in the top of the ninth by New Mexico's Jacob Nelson and the game-winning RBI single with one out by Trey Porras in the top of the 11th proved to be too much for the Cougars.

BYU (29-26) led at 1-0 in the first inning and 3-1 in the sixth. But New Mexico tied it in the fourth on a double by D.J. Peterson. The Cougars escaped further damage in that inning when catcher Alex Wolfe held on to a perfect throw from Jaycob Brugman in right field and got the final out of the inning at the plate to complete the first of two double plays Brugman keyed from right. ...
