Change, change, change (apologies, Aretha)....A change is gonna come (apologies, Sam Cooke).... Pro teams and college/university teams are in the midst of challenges regarding team mascots and team names.... High school is next... In Texas there are 64 teams which have mascots that are typically associated with violent behavior, and historically associated with caucasian groups....Some are well-known, such as Raiders, Spartans, Vikings, Marauders, Trojans, , Knights, Gladiators, Crusaders, and Conquistadors....Rough Riders were instrumental in the United States seizing Cuba from Spain and controlling/influencing Cuban development for 60 years....Theodore Roosevelt became president while the United States was engaging in a war with native Filipinos and did nothing to stop it, and boasted that he also seized the Panama canal construction, resulting in United States hegemony over Panama for 70 years.... There is the problematical Robstown "Cotton Pickers".... There are 8 teams with the mascot "Rebels" or a clever attempt to keep the idea alive but using a variation (Colonels, Generals, Volunteers)....Locally, Richland has already determined to drop "Rebels" as its mascot....San Antonio Lee was once the Rebels and changed to Volunteers....Houston Lee changed its school name from Lee to Wisdom and dropped Rebels for Generals....Tyler Lee changed to Red Raiders in the 1980s.... There are three schools still named for Robert E. Lee.... The town known as Tyler was named for John Tyler, a Virginia plantation owner and later president...The older high school there is named for him.... There are schools named for Texas leaders who were responsible for seizing a vast territory from Mexico and creating an independent nation which allowed slavery...Austin, Bowie, Lamar, Sam Houston, Travis.... There are 48 teams which use the names of Native Americans (Indians, Aztecs, Warriors [usually a depiction of a Native American is associated with this], Apaches, Chieftains....Two towns (and therefore, the schools' names) are Native American individuals' names (Nacona Indians and Quannah Indians) and two towns are tribal names (Cherokee Indians and Comanche Indians).... There are 14 teams identified as "Rangers" and one "Troopers"....Rangers have been discredited by the latest historical account published.... There are 11 teams known as the "Cowboys"....They were a part of subduing the Native Americans during the 19th Century.... I'll go drink my warm Ovaltine now and let anyone who wants to rant about this do so.... The times, they are a-changing (apologies, Bob Dylan)
